Galeb Liko Soho Group claim first title in 11 years to break Luka Bar’s dominance

Galeb Liko Soho Group secured three wins in a row in the championship series with Luka Bar to claim top honours from the Montenegrin women’s national league for the third time since the country’s independence, thus breaking the winning streak of the team coached by Vladimir Milacic – which had lasted for the past nine years. In the third round of the playoff series, Galeb Liko Soho Group celebrated a 3-0 triumph (25-20, 25-21, 25-16) to lift the trophy for the first time in 11 years. They had previously won the women’s league in 2010 and 2011. Galeb completed a clean sweep of the domestic competitions this year – as they had recently beaten Luka Bar in the National Cup final as well.

In the last match of the title-deciding series, Megan Fergus from USA was the best player for Galeb Liko Soho with a personal tally of 10 points, while Dusanka Petrovic scored the most points (12) for Luka Bar in their losing effort.

Moreover, I would like to emphasise the great merits of Rajko Tijanic, assistant coach Tomo Pekic and fitness coach Vladan Mihailovic, who with their great efforts were a great help during the entire season. I can openly say that this was a dream season and that it is my privilege to be the coach of this team. Once again, I would like to thank the audience who were the wind in our backs throughout this campaign. In the end, a double crown, as befits a team wearing red and white,” said Petar Kokovic, head coach of Galeb Liko Soho Group.

The President of the Volleyball Federation of Montenegro (OSCG), Mr Cvetko Pajkovic presented the Championship trophy to Teodora Cavic, team captain of Galeb Liko Soho Group.

Reinforced by USA players Gerard and Fergus in two of the key positions, setter and opposite, Galeb was simply too strong for all rivals, including the drastically younger team of Luka Bar this year, whose ranks included home star Dusanka Petrovic.

The member of the OSCG Managing Board, Mr Nenad Vujanovic presented the players and staff of Luka Bar with the silver medals for the runner-up side of the competition.
