The final stage of Iceland’s national cup took place this past weekend. The three-day event turned into a spectacular show, thus reflecting the Icelandic Volleyball Federation’s vision to market and sell a competition of the highest level – with live TV coverage nationwide available as well.

It is a truly major highlight when the National Cup weekend takes place in Iceland. This year, the organisers at the Icelandic Volleyball Federation (BLI) were happy with two high-level Volleyball matches. The women’s final accounted for a five-set thriller, where KA from Akureyri claimed the title after edging their rivals Afturelding from Mosfellbaer after coming back twice from one set down (19-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 15-11).

On the men’s side, Hamar from Hveragerdi, i.e. the ‘Flower Boys’, who owe their nickname to the town’s greenhouses, took on KA from Akureyri. Hamar, the winners of the national cup and national league titles in 2021, eventually stormed to a 3-0 victory. The dominant team for the past two years after the return of the Valdimarsson brothers did not leave any chance to their opponents (25-19, 25-21, 25-23).

The National Cup weekend showed that Volleyball’s main stronghold is coming from outside of the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik, as teams that entered the semi-finals were from Neskaupstadur, Akureyri, Kopavogur, Mosfellsbaer and Hveragerdi.
