This coming Wednesday, Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA of Italy will play their second final in a European Cups competition after the CEV Champions League Volley 2019 Super Finals, when they lifted the most coveted trophy in European Volleyball in front of a sell-out crowd in Berlin. Just a few days away from the CEV Challenge Cup final matches against France’s Neptunes NANTES, Igor Gorgonzola have signed the Russian spiker Marina Markova, best scorer of the Turkish League this season where she played for Muratpasa SigortaShop. Markova will be playing for NOVARA until the end of the current season.
After dealing with a long series of injuries, head coach Lorenzo Bernardi will finally have all the players available for the CEV Challenge Cup finals, including Caterina Bosetti who has been struggling for over a month with some issues to her right knee. Anne Buijs (2018/2019, with Saugella MONZA) and Francesca Bosio (2022/2023, with Reale Mutua Fenera CHIERI) are the only players from Igor Gorgonzola who have already played and won a CEV Challenge Cup Final.
More than 2,500 spectators are expected to come together at Pala Igor Gorgonzola for the upcoming home game of the CEV Challenge Cup Final, including several hundreds of players from the junior and youth teams of the city.
Fabio Leonardi, Igor Gorgonzola’s CEO: “Playing a European Cup is crucial for a club like ours and after five seasons we are playing again a final, following on from the Champions League we won in Berlin. I am very proud of our staff and our team for the efforts they have put in this competition since the beginning and even since the prequalification tournament – the WEVZA Cup. Now it is time to do our best and try to win the cup.”
Lorenzo Bernardi“We are proud of our European campaign so far and we are extremely happy to be in the finals. Now we will face a very good team like NANTES, and I am happy about it: I think that a European Cup deserves a final involving two good teams and I expect two big clashes and a good show for the audience. We will do our best to stay focused and show our best Volleyball: this is a very important goal for us, and we are ready to fight for it.”
