Bar, Montenegro, October 4, 2014. Romania’s Stiinta Explorari BAIA MARE upset hosts Buducnost PODGORICA of Montenegro in the second semi-final match of the 2014 men’s BVA Cup to play Turkey’s Maliye Milli Piyango ANKARA in the final that is scheduled for Sunday, October 5, at 6:30pm local time at Topolica hall in Bar. The eventual winners of the competition will get the right to participate in the 2015 edition of the CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup, playing there Slovakia’s Spartak MYJAVA.
Stiinta Explorari BAIA MARE did not leave any chance to the local heroes of Buducnost, runners-up from the last edition of Montenegro’s national league, cruising to a speedy 3:0 victory (25-22, 25-13, 25-18). Florin Balhaceanu top scored for the winning side with 18 points.
“We have a young team and we came together only a week ago, so there is still a lot of work to do and we made a lot of mistakes,” said Buducnost head coach Zoran Vukcevic. “Anyway, I am proud of my players, especially Babic and Strugar, who played a good match. This tournament is a great chance to gain experience for us.”
“Buducnost has a very young team but their future looks bright,” commented Stiinta Explorari mentor Marius Botea. “However, tonight we also played a good match. We made some mistakes in the first set because this was only our first match this season but after that we played good. Tomorrow we are going to have a difficult match because the Turkish team is very strong, but we will be giving our best to win the title.”
Turkey’s Maliye Milli Piyango ANKARA lived up to their status of pre-favourite winning the first semi-final match with Greece’s PAOK THESSALONIKI by 3:1 (25-23, 25-22, 25-27, 26-24).
“It was a very close match, we showed a good performance in attack and reception but we had problems with our service and block,” said PAOK head coach Ioannis Kalmazidis. “This explains why we lost the match. We stay focused and now have our sight set on a victory since we really want to go home with a medal.”
“This victory is only the first step on our way to win the BVA Cup,” said Josko Milenkoski, the mentor of Maliye Milli Piyango ANKARA. “I am very satisfied with the way we played tonight. PAOK has a very good team and the score line shows that these teams were evenly matched in this game. In the second set we trailed by 5 points but we came back strong and winning that set was crucial in my opinion.”
Bram Van den Dries paced Maliye Milli Piyango ANKARA with 22 points; 30 points scored by Venezuelan Hernando Gomez were not enough for PAOK to seize the day.
