On the outskirts of of the 2024 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League Finals in Bangkok, Thailand, the 12 qualified teams for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in the women’s volleyball tournament learnt their fate, with the draw setting their path towards the coveted trophy.
Six European teams entered the fray, with three of them being drawn into Pool C, where Italy, reigning European champions Türkiye and the Netherlands will face off trying to secure a quarter-finals berth, when they also face the Dominican Republic.
Türkiye, which had a superb 2023, winning both the CEV EuroVolley 2023 Women and the 2024 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League, will be looking for their maiden medal, but their rivalry with Italy will be rekindled, as the two sides have also met in 2023 in the European premium competition, with Türkiye securing the win in the semi-finals.
Serbia, winners of the the bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, were drawn in Pool A, a very well-balanced pool, alongside hosts France, the People’s Republic of China, as well as the reigning champions from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the United States of America.
In Pool B, one of the favourites of the competition, the runners-up of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Brazil, are due to face Poland, Japan and Kenya. Poland are returning to the competition for the first time since 2008, when they finished ninth, and have won two bronze medals, in 1964 and 1968.
The Olympic volleyball tournaments at Paris 2024 will be conducted under a new format, starting with three round-robin pools of four. The pool winners, the pool runners-up and the two best ranked third-placed teams will advance to the quarterfinals for the start of the single elimination bracket that will lead to the semifinals and eventually to the medal matches to determine the Olympic podium.
The Paris 2024 volleyball matches will be held at the South Paris Arena in the French capital from 27 July to 11 August.
