For the first time in more than ten years, a team from Austria fought to advance to the quarterfinals of the men’s CEV Challenge Cup, but Swiss neighbours LAUSANNE UC ended the journey of VCA AMSTETTEN NÖ by recording a 3-0 away victory to go with their 3-2 success at home a week ago.

“It was a close match. In my opinion, winning the second set after our opponents had two set points was the key to success today."

“We had shown some promising results in the last rounds and gained experience. We are a young team, hoping to aim for more in the next years,” said Michael Henschke, sports director of VCA AMSTETTEN NÖ.

After a close fight in the early stages of the first set, the Swiss team managed to break away and eventually took it by 25-16. In the second set, they also had the lead, but the Austrians fought back and had two set points, which the Swiss team’s top scorer Daniel Ramirez Pita cancelled with two spectacular points. LAUSANNE UC turned the score around and won the set 27-25.

The third set was a close one too and head-to-head until the last point. After one and a half hours, the Swiss managed to cash their first two match points and scored the second (25-23) to advance to the quarterfinals where they are due to play NARBONNE Volley of France or Portugal’s Sporting CP LISBOA.
