Even a straight-set home victory over winless Vojvodina NS Seme Novi Sad will not guarantee Belgium’s Knack Roeselare a ticket to the next round as they host the Serbian team at 20:30 local time at the Schiervelde. Knack are currently second on a 3-2 win-loss record and 8 points and well in the race for the three runner-up vacancies, but in addition to making the best out of their last match in Pool E, they also have to keep their fingers crossed for favourable outcomes in the other pools. Knack ROESELARE v Vojvodina NS Seme NOVI SAD
Knack Roeselare started the match with too many individual errors. Vojvodina dominated the first set (3-7 and 5-11) but the home team fought back and tied at 20-20. Knack Roeselare needed four setballs until Aleksander Blagojevic missed his attack at 28-26.
Home team started second part with more confidence but the score stayed tight in balance up to 20-20. But then Hendrik Tuerlinckx took the responsibilty of scoring with his attacks and Andreas Fragkos from the service-line made the difference. Knack Roeselare closed the set with 25-20.Third set was a total domination of Knack Roeselare. The home team put a lot of constancy in their game, made only small mistakes and controlled the game till the last whistle.
The enthusiastic atmosphere in the hall by the 1,650 home spectators, helped Knack Roeselare to turn a difficult start into their favour with a straight sets victory. The Belgian team ensured its second place in Pool E and took the qualification for the quarter finals.
Libero Dennis Deroey was chosen MVP of the match. Top scorer of the match was Hendrik Tuerlinckx with 19 points. Best scorer for Vojvodina Novi Sad was Pavle Peric with 16 points.
Sinisa Gavrancic, head coach of Vojvodina NOVI SAD: “We had some chances in the first set and the beginning of the second set. I want to congratulate my team, which still is a very young team. Our goal was to reach the group stage of the Champions League. This campaign was a good experience for my team. But I also want to congratulate Knack Volley. They deserved to win this match and continue to the quarter finals.”
Steven Vanmedegael, head coach of Knack ROESELARE: “We took a bad start with some individual errors. We had difficulties to bring our regular play but started playing better. The key was our better play in block-defence and small amount of errors. So I want to congratulate my team for their best performance in this edition of the Champions League. Now it is waiting until tomorrow afternoon to know our opponent in the net round. Will it be Civitanova with setter Stijn D’Hulst (ex-Knack Volley), or Perugia with coach Vital Heynen or Jastrzebski from Poland..?”
