Beach Volleyball European Championship moved to Cagliari, dates remain unchanged
2014 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship - Final

Luxembourg/Rome, April 30, 2014. The 2014 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship Final that was originally due to take place at the Foro Italico in Rome has been moved to Cagliari following negotiations between the CEV and the Italian Volleyball Federation. The dates for the major highlight of this year’s Beach Volleyball season remain unchanged with 32 teams per gender set to square off and battle for the medals from June 3 to 8.

This is the fourth time the European Championship will be taking place in Italy after Riccione, Pescara and Jesolo played host to the 1996, 1997 and 2001 editions respectively. Cagliari, the capital of the island of Sardinia, is looking forward to welcoming Europe’s Beach Volleyball elite for a much anticipated showdown where 100,000 € prize money per gender will be at stake. The charming and ancient city of Cagliari already hosted a CEV event in recent times, namely the European Qualification Tournament for the 2011 edition of the FIVB World Grand Prix.

A stadium with a capacity of 2,000 seats will be set up on the local beach – Poetto di Quartu Sant’Elena (see picture) – by the Mediterranean Sea, a wonderful location where Beach Volleyball will find its “natural” home.

The 2014 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship Final will follow the tremendous success of the last edition held in Klagenfurt where the competition was visited by more than 100,000 fans. Spain’s Adrian Gavira/Pablo Herrera and Austria’s siblings Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger will try to defend the title they won last year at Austria’s largest sandbox. The host country will be a force to be reckoned with, the more after Paolo Nicolai/Daniele Lupo won the FIVB Fuzhou Open – Italy’s first gold medal at any FIVB World Tour event in 28 years – and Marta Menegatti/Viktoria Orsi Toth were the only European duo to make the 1/4 finals of the women’s tournament where they lost to Brazil’s newly formed pair Juliana Felisberta Silva/Maria Antonelli.
