The Hague – The city where people’s heart beats for Beach Volleyball
2018 CEV DELA Beach Volleyball European Championship

Luxembourg, July 10, 2018. It is only a very few days until the start of the 2018 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship, the real and ultimate ‘Beach Volleyball party’ of the year. Starting from next Monday, the city of The Hague will be playing host to many exciting matches, including all those where the medals will be at stake on July 21 and 22. People may know The Hague as the international city of peace and justice, but The Hague also has a lot to offer in terms of sports and culture.

The third largest city in the Netherlands is the residence of King Willem-Alexander and the seat of the Senate and the House of Representatives and almost all ministries. The Hague is also the home base for the International Court of Justice, located in the Peace Palace. The majority of foreign embassies to the Netherlands have their seat in The Hague as well, as do more than 150 international organisations.

The #EuroBeachVolley competition in The Hague will commence on Monday, July 16 with a number of matches scheduled for men’s pool play. Home stars and 2013 world champions Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen will begin their quest for gold playing Turkey’s outsiders Murat Giginoglu and Volkan Gögtepe, winners of the gold medal at the Mediterranean Games only a couple of weeks ago. Brouwer and Meeuwsen very much hope to use the home-court advantage to improve on the bronze medal they won a year ago. Their pool features the likes of Belgium’s Dries Koekelkoren and Tom van Walle as well as of Germany’s Markus Böckermann and Lars Flüggen. Koekelkoren and van Walle finished fourth at last year’s #EuroBeachVolley in Jurmala, losing the bronze medal match to Brouwer/Meeuwsen.

The fans in The Hague will enjoy the performances of another pair vying for gold – Latvia’s Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins. The 2015 European champions and silver medallists from the 2013, 2014 and 2017 editions will be trying to add another accolade to their resume – and they are up for this since they just won the FIVB 4-Star event in Espinho, Portugal. Their pool includes the likes of Germany’s Philipp Arne Bergmann/Yannick Harms, Poland’s Grzegorz Fijalek/Michal Bryl and Lithuania’s Arnas Rumsevicius/Lukas Kazdailis. The young Lithuanians won bronze earlier this year at the first-ever European Snow Volleyball Championship in Austria.

It is not the first time that #EuroBeachVolley takes place in The Hague. The eleven kilometres long beach makes the city a popular seaside resort with endless opportunities for fun. The renewed boulevard of Scheveningen with pavilions, restaurants and shops ensures that The Hague can count on a large numbers of visitors throughout the year. The beach of Scheveningen played host to the 2006 and 2012 editions of Europe’s flagship Beach Volleyball event – and six years ago, Marleen van Iersel and Sanne Keizer delighted the Dutch crowd to seize the continental crown while Emiel Boersma and Daan Spijkers won men’s silver.

Two very strong women’s teams will be starting their journey in The Hague as well – last year’s silver medal winners Kristyna Kolocova/Michala Kvapilova of Czech Republic and Switzerland’s Joana Heidrich/Anouk Vergé-Dépré. These are definitely among the ‘hottest’ contenders for the medals that will be at stake on July 21 when the women’s tournament reaches its climax.

The sports beach and the harbour are the beating heart of the Dutch coast, including The Hague Beach Stadium and the Topzeilcentrum. Together with Sportcampus Zuiderpark, the actual venue of #EuroBeachVolley, these facilities form the basis of top sporting events in The Hague. The Hague is ambitious concerning the organisation of international sports events. The city hosted the 2014 FIH Hockey World Cup and the 2015 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships while the Volvo Ocean Race finished in The Hague in June 2018.
