Much-anticipated, historic #EuroBeachVolley underway in the Netherlands
2018 CEV DELA Beach Volleyball European Championship

Apeldoorn, The Netherlands, July 15, 2018. The moment that Beach Volleyball fans had been waiting for since early this year finally arrived on a sunny, blue-sky Sunday afternoon in the Dutch city of Apeldoorn. The 2018 CEV DELA Beach Volleyball European Championship went underway with a cool and ‘refreshing’ opening ceremony, featuring a good share of the Dutch Beach Volleyball and Volleyball elite as well as representatives from the four cities – The Hague, Apeldoorn, Rotterdam and Utrecht – hosting the ‘Beach Volleyball party of the year’.

Bas van de Goor, a member of the Dutch national team that won Olympic gold at Atlanta in 1996, was the confident master of the ceremony, which featured Tournament Director Reinder Nummerdor as well as another three elite ambassadors – Richard Schuil, Robert Horstink and Rebekka Kadijk.

The Netherlands are hosting the European Beach Volleyball Championship for the third time in history

It actually started with a very emotional moment, when the organisers paid tribute to a national Beach Volleyball referee, the late Ronald van der Linden, to continue with show acts from young, talented dancers who shortly afterwards marched into the stadium at Marktplein with towels displaying the national flags of the 19 countries participating in the competition.

CEV Vice President Maris Pekalis officially opened this year’s #EuroBeachVolley, wishing the very best of luck to all participating teams and predicting a very exciting competition as the European Championship takes place for the first time since its inception in 1993 across as many as four cities. “The fans can look forward to witnessing Beach Volleyball of the highest level,” said Nummerdor, himself a three-time European champion with Schuil. “I do expect to see matches and a competition worthy of the Olympic Games and the World Championships as well,” he added.

Nummerdor had the honour and privilege to unveil the iconic trophy especially designed for the winners of the competition – a trophy that has toured the Netherlands these past few weeks, thus igniting a real Beach Volleyball fever across the country.

The trophy for the winners of #EuroBeachVolley was unveiled on Sunday night in Apeldoorn

It is the third time in history that #EuroBeachVolley takes place in the Netherlands – after previous editions held in The Hague and Scheveningen in 2006 and 2012. The very first edition of the men’s tournament dates back to 1993 – while the crowning of Europe’s first ‘Queens of the Beach’ followed in 1994.
