Boehlé and Van de Velde start the Dutch party in Apeldoorn
2018 CEV DELA Beach Volleyball European Championship

Apeldoorn, The Netherlands, July 15, 2018. The #EuroBeachVolley opening match at Marktplein in Apeldoorn definitely set the tone of what the fans can expect for the coming week across as many as four cities in the Netherlands. It is obviously still a long way until the medal matches take place next Saturday and Sunday in The Hague – but the Netherlands immediately had something to cheer about as Dirk Boehlé/Steven Van de Velde claimed a dramatic 2-1 victory (21-18, 29-31, 15-9) in their matchup with Italy’s Marco Caminati and Enrico Rossi.

Two up-and-coming teams from the Netherlands and Italy took centre stage in a city known as the Dutch Volleyball capital – and they delivered a real show for the sell-out crowd in attendance. This especially applies to the second set where the drama unfolded as the Dutchmen failed to capitalise on as many as six match balls before Marco Caminati and Enrico Rossi closed it in their favour at 31-29 following a series of literally breath-taking rallies.

The silver medal winners from this year’s Mediterranean Games, Rossi and Caminati had a rocky start to the match, trailing for most of the opening set before briefly edging ahead towards the end. However, this did not prevent Boehlé and Van de Velde from scoring a series of straight points to cash the first act of this match, much to the delight of a partisan home crowd.

It was down to a tiebreaker to determine the first winners at this year’s #EuroBeachVolley – and Boehlé/Van de Velde seemed to recover quite swiftly from the setback they suffered in the second set. The Dutchmen, rightfully wearing orange shirts for this match, rushed to a 5-2 lead. Steven Van de Velde rose to the occasion securing a four-point advantage at 8-4 with a monster block, and the Dutch show continued. Boehlé and Van de Velde wasted another two match balls but this time around Van de Velde eventually finished it all off with a powerful crosscourt at 15-9 to set the tone for the Beach Volleyball party due to follow later this week.

The home side paid tribute to the loud support from the stands as they briefly addressed the fans – and their campaign in Apeldoorn will now continue with another two matches in Pool D against Poland’s Bartosz Losiak/Piotr Kantor, a team definitely vying for the medals here, and Switzerland’s Mirco Gerson/Adrian Heidrich.
