Ladies take the stage on the second day in Rotterdam
2018 CEV DELA Beach Volleyball European Championship

Rotterdam, The Netherlands, July 17, 2018. In the only two men’s matches of the day in Rotterdam, the Netherlands own Sven Vismans and Jannes van der Ham made Poland’s Mariusz Prudel and Jakub Szalankiewicz work for a 2-1 (19-21, 21-15, 15-10) win, while the highest placed Austrian duo Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst got defeated in straight sets (19-21, 17-21) by Russia’s Konstantin Semenov/Ilya Leshukov, who thus established themselves as leaders of Pool C.

Tuesday games in Rotterdam started with an all-German bout between Margareta Kozuch and Karla Boerger against Kim Behrens and Sandra Ittlinger, seeded 7th and 10th respectively. The second part of the game was its real highlight, as Boerger/Kozuch showed a fantastic effort coming back from trailing 5-9 to catching up at 14-all and eventually winning the whole match 2-0 (21-19, 21-16) moments later. “We were really down and I’m super-proud of us that we were calm and patient enough to be able to recover and that we could control it. That makes it feel even better in the end,” said Margareta Kozuch. Behrens/Ittlinger redeemed themselves by defeating Oda Johanne Ulveseth/Ingrid Lunde of Norway 2-1 (21-14, 20-22, 15-13) in their second match.

The second game of the day saw Ulveseth and Lunde face the Russian team - Evgenia Ukolova who started the season after coming back from last year’s shoulder injury, teaming up with her old partner Ekaterina Birlova. The Russian duo outclassed their Norwegian opponents in the first set to go on and win the game 2-1 (21-9, 19-21, 15-13). They scored another victory a couple of hours later, defeating Kozuch/Borger 2-1 (21-14, 18-21, 15-11) to take the lead in Pool G. “It wasn’t easy for me to come back”, said Ukolova. “We didn’t play many good tournaments this season so at this moment we don’t have the experience of playing against a strong team and because of this we can only try to work our maximum in each game. I think our form is growing slowly but steadily - a month ago it was hard to imagine that we could play on this level,” she concluded.

The home crowd flocked to see the match of their own Sanne Keizer and Maddelein Meppelink – both former European Champions (separately but, curiously, with the same partner – Marleen Ramond van Iersel). Carried by the fans’ cheers, they triumphed 2-0 (21-18, 21-14) over Andrea Strbova and Natalia Dubovcova of Slovakia. Meppelink’s summary of the game was short: “We trusted our plan and our play and got into the game really well later on, managed to adapt to the conditions and got this win for a good start.”

Barbora Hermannova and Marketa Slukova from Czech Republic ended the day with a 2-1 (20-22, 21-15, 15-10) win over the French Aline Chamereau/Alexandra Jupiter in what in their own words was “not the prettiest of matches” but an important victory nonetheless.
