DOL shapes up exciting pool stage for EuroBeachVolley 2019
CEV EuroBeachVolley 2019

Moscow, Russia, June 19, 2019. The Drawing of Lots held on Wednesday at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Moscow set the tone for a truly much-anticipated EuroBeachVolley 2019, which will run in the Russian capital from August 5 to 11 at a purpose-built venue right next to the iconic Luzhniki Stadium. There is a lot to look forward to right from the pool stage of the women’s competition as the top 32 teams in Europe vie for top honours. The continental championship returns to Moscow for the first time since 2005 – and to Russia 10 years after the competition held in Sochi back in 2009.

The reigning ‘Queens of the Beach’ and 2018 EuroBeachVolley bronze medal winners, Marketa Slukova and Barbora Hermannova of the Czech Republic, will take on two former European champions in Pool A – namely Marta Menegatti of Italy and Greece’s Vasiliki Arvaniti. Four-time European champion and nine-time EuroBeachVolley medallist Laura Ludwig of Germany returns to the continental stage after maternity leave and with a new partner – Margareta Kozuch – to play some tough opponents in Pool B – Finland’s Taru Lahti-Liukkonen/Anniina Parkkinen and Switzerland’s Joana Heidrich/Anouk Vergé-Dépré.

Reigning European champions Sanne Keizer/Madelein Meppelink will try to retain the crown they won in The Hague last year and take on Russia’s rising stars and Youth Olympic champions Mariia Bocharova/Maria Voronina as well as on the winners of this year’s Baden Open, Katharina Schützenhöfer/Lena Plesiutschnig of Austria, in Pool C.

Russia’s dreams of home glory will rely mostly on Ekaterina Birlova/Evgenia Ukolova, the silver medal winners from the 2015 edition, who have picked Poland’s Kinga Wojtasik/Katarzyna Kociolek in Pool D and former U22 European champions Tina Graudina and Anastasija Kravcenoka of Latvia. Reigning U22 European champions Nadezda Makroguzova and Svetlana Kholomina head Pool H, where they will take, among others, on the experienced Spanish duo consisting of Elsa Baquerizo and Liliana Fernandez Steiner.

Germany have another three teams that could be in the mix for the medals, including Karla Borger/Julia Sude, both former EuroBeachVolley medallists, who make their debut at the continental event as a team in a pool featuring former European champion Marleen van Iersel and her young partner Joy Stubbe of the Netherlands. Last year’s silver medallists Nina Betschart and Tanja Hüberli of Switzerland will be hoping to secure another accolade starting their journey from Pool G, which features teams from Slovakia, France and the Netherlands.
