Montpellier 1-Star event continues in full swing
2019 FIVB World Tour 1-Star - Montpellier

Montpellier, France, August 29, 2019. A ticket to the quarterfinals was at stake on Thursday as the Main Draw of the FIVB World Tour 1-Star event in Montpellier continued, while the teams suffering a second straight loss in their pool had to leave the competition.

Youngsters Arthur Canet/Téo Rotar lost their match against Sven Vismans and Tom van Steenis of the Netherlands, even though they put up a good fight, especially in the second set. Still, this young team has a lot of potential to grow and achieve success for France in the years to come.

Jeremy Ullmann/Florian Gosselin saved three match points while playing against Arwin Kopschar and Michael Murauer (AUT). Despite the loss, the Frenchmen will continue their journey in the Round of 12 on Friday morning. “After seeing them during the qualifications, and yesterday during the main draw, when they had already raised their level of play even further, we expected a rather physical match. Therefore, we are not too disappointed today,” commented Ullmann.

The other two French pairs accounted for the only two three-set matches of the day. Adrian Caravano and Romain Di Giantommaso left a very good impression on the audience in their matchup with Issa Batrane and Frederick Bialokoz of England. The Englishmen had nothing to lose but showing their talent, much motivation, and spectacular receptions, the French team managed to claim a victory to stay in the competition.

Quincy Ayé/Arnaud Gauthier-Rat, on the other hand, failed to edge Dirk Boehlé and Stefan Boermans (NED). The Dutchmen secured their spot in the quarterfinals, while the home team will re-start their campaign from the Round of 12.

The other English team, brothers Javier and Joaquin Bello are still in the competition after they beat Sadegh Mohajer/Ruben Olai Lund Løvli. The Norwegians, playing for the third day in a row after making it through the qualifications, looked tired and could not show much resistance.

Austria still have three teams in the competition, as Moritz Fabian Kindl/Mathias Seiser and Florian Schnetzer/Laurenz Leitner beat their respective opponents from Thailand.

Finally, the anticipated Japanese derby did not take place due to an injury, with Kensuke Shoji and Masato Kurasaka staying in the tournament after the withdrawal of their compatriots Koichi Nishimura and Daisuke Shibata.
