Turkey complete League Round with eighth win to shape up semi-final with Israel

Izmir, Turkey, August 30, 2015. Turkey completed their campaign in the League Round of the 2015 CEV Volleyball European League – Women with yet another victory as they claimed also their second home match with rookies Georgia by 3:0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-12). Turkey finished the first stage of the competition in first place with a record of eight wins in 10 matches and will be taking on Israel in the semis scheduled for this coming Thursday and Sunday, playing the first match away and then enjoying the home advantage for the return on September 6. Georgia, on the other hand, finishes last after losing all of their matches in their European League debut season. In the other semi-final, Hungary will be playing Greece after these teams settled for second and third place respectively at the end of the League Round.

Once again outside spiker Ceren Kestirengöz (pictured, #9) paced Turkey with 15 points as Fatma Yildirim added another 11 to the count of the home heroines. Ann Kalandadze topped the charts for Georgia with seven points.

Turkey set the pace of the match right from its outset leading 8:3 at the first technical time-out of the opening set. After the break, the hosts continued to perform well and once the second mandatory break was called, Turkey was 16:4 up. Their middle blockers were just outstanding at the net and they prevented the Georgian spikers from scoring, with the set finishing in a landslide 25-13 victory for Turkey.

Turkey controlled the match from start to end also in the second and third sets and did so quite comfortably recording 25-11 and 25-12 set wins to cement their leadership in the final standing of the League Round. Their supremacy is confirmed by all stats as Turkey held a 6-2 advantage in blocks, 8-6 in aces and killed 42 spikes vs. only 13 for Georgia.

“We are very happy with our performance in this last round of the European League and especially with the fact that we brought it to an end with another two wins,” top scorer Ceren Kestirengöz said. “We have finished the group stage in first place and now we are about to start the final stages of the competition with the semis and the finals. We want to perform as well as we can in order to be the champions in the end.”

“We finished the League Round in first place after a long and tough period,” said Turkey coach Ismail Yengil. “Our next opponent in the semis is Israel. We already played two matches with them but the next ones will be a lot more difficult. We will try to play our best in order to progress to the final.”
