Zaksa KEDZIERZYN-KOZLE take their place at #CLF4Kazan
2018 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Men

Luxembourg, April 10, 2018. With only one match tonight in the 2018 CEV Volleyball Champions League, all eyes were on the ZF Arena where not only was there a place at Europe's premier event, the Final Four scheduled for Kazan (Russia) next month at stake, but also a considerable amount of beer.  The first 500 fans that came to the ZF Arena were in with a chance of winning one of 500 five-litre barrels of beer, if the home side, VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, won their home game with Zaksa KEDZIERZYN-KOZLE.  However, in the end what all those in attendance saw was a dominant performance by the Polish side, who won 3-0 to take their place at the Finals alongside hosts Zenit KAZAN.

VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN (GER) vs. Zaksa KEDZIERZYN-KOZLE (POL) 0-3 (19-25, 18-25, 13-25)

  • Zaksa KEDZIERZYN-KOZLE played an almost perfect first set in attacking. They scored 16 out of 17 attacks (94%) with only one kill block for VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN.
  • Maurice Torres was the top scorer again. He scored 16 points for his team. On the home team’s side it was David Sossenheimer who scored nine points.
  • The Polish fans in attendance celebrated continuously after the match for 30 minutes with their team.
  • The German fans showed blue and white balloons to their team for their “winners of the hearts”.
  • Until this match, Vital Heynen had successfully won at least one challenge, however against Zaksa he didn’t. He tried four times – but they were always in favour of KEDZIERZYN-KOZLE.
  • Tonight's match brought a new attendance record for VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN in this year’s campaign. 3,600 spectators came to see the match against the reigning Polish champions.

“Zaksa did a very good job tonight. We have to accept that the Polish champion is a better team than the championship leader in Germany. Congratulations to Zaksa. Their attack was amazing. And we learned a lot tonight,” said Vital Heynen, head coach of VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN.

“I’m very proud of my team and the fans tonight. They did very well in attacking and defending. Now we have our ticket for the Final Four. I hope our fans will come to Kazan like they always follow us through Europe,” said Andrea Gardini, coach of Zaksa KEDZIERZYN-KOZLE.
