Imoco become first team confirmed for Super Finals
2019 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Women

Luxembourg, April 9, 2019.  It was another successful trip to Turkey for Imoco Volley CONEGLIANO as they made light work of securing the two sets they required following last weeks straight sets win over Fenerbahce Opet ISTANBUL.  The first ever Super Finals are set for May 18th in Berlin and the Italian side became the first to confirm their spot at the Volleyball party of 2019.   Should Imoco Volley eventually win the final and take Gold, they will then have the full set of medals in only a three-year period, after taking Silver in 2016/17 and Bronze in 2017/18!  For more on the Super Finals go to the dedicated event page:

Confident from the start, Imoco dominated across the court building leads in each set with apparent ease.  The Turkish side fought back hard on multiple occasions but in the end the Italian side had too much.  The conclusion of the second set was a thriller, ending in dramatic fashion:

Fenerbahce Opet ISTANBUL (TUR) vs Imoco Volley CONEGLIANO (ITA) 0-3 (18-25, 22-25, 26-28)
•    Everyone at Burhan Felek Voleybol Salonu was clearly up for this one with the place erupting when home favourite Melissa VARGAS took the first point with a trademark block.
•    Imoco, who had their fair share of travelling fans with them, seemed able to cope with whatever the home side threw their way and lead by four points when Fenerbahce coach Zoran Terzic called a time-out (8-12). However, they could not break the flow and rhythm of the Italian team and the Panthers secured a first set win at 25-18.
•    Fenerbahce Opet started the second set eager to stay in with a chance, but Imoco had no intention of giving up.  The home side did lead on multiple occasions, but Miriam SYLLA scored consistently giving Imoco much needed energy.  Star setter Joanna Wolosz also began to make a difference, pushing her team to 16-11 at the second technical time-out.
•    Into the twenties and Imoco probably thought they had it in the bag, but the home side came back once more and got within two.  But in the end they came up just short and the name confirmed for the Super Finals was Imoco Volley CONEGLIANO (25-22).
•    With the tie over, the teams played on to finish the match in what proved to be the closest set of the night.  It was however the team of the moment that took it (28-26), and with it won the match in straight sets.

•    Best scorer of the match was Samanta FABRIS of Imoco with 17 points, also giving her the MVP award. While Samantha BRICIO of Fenerbahce topped the ace charts, scoring three against her former team.
•    Melissa VARGAS extended her lead in the scoring charts for this season’s Champions League, now with 230 points to her name.  With the closest player still in the competition being Paola EGONU on 144, she looks to have tied that accolade up.
•    In the quarterfinals, Imoco Volley CONEGLIANO needed a Golden Set (15-10) against Eczacibasi VitrA ISTANBUL in order to reach the semi-finals but things were a lot smoother this time around.  Their record against Turkish sides in the Champions League now stands at W7-L4.

Melis Yilmaz, player of Fenerbahce: “For us it was one of the most important matches of the season but we could not start well and play our own game. Imoco Volley are a very good and experienced team. We have been fighting very well until the semi-finals. We want to win the trophy next year.”

Bahar Toksoy Guidetti, player of Fenerbahce: “After losing in Treviso last week, we worked hard to get ready for a comeback at home. Actually, in the second set, we had such an opportunity but unfortunately, we could not do it. We pushed hard but that was not enough for making it to the Super Final. We lost the game but that was a valuable experience for us to become stronger in the future.”
