Russia win, but Bulgaria fight until the end
2011 CEV Volleyball European Championship - Women

Busto Arsizio, Italy, September 23, 2011 – Russia defeated Bulgary 3-0 on day 1 of the 2011 CEV Volleyball European Championship – Women at PalaYamamay Gym in Busto Arsizio.

Russia won 25-13, 26-24, 25-21 against a very competitive Bulgaria on the opening day of Preliminary Pool D play.

The first set began with Russia maintaining a steady advantage of two or three points. Two aces of Bulgarian Elitsa Vasileva brought Bulgaria closer. Both teams played on a high level,  but Russia and its leader Ekaterina Gamova set the pace with blistering winners and spectacular blocks to take a 15-9 lead. The Russians were well organized and concentrated, and Bulgaria was not able to react fast enough.

Thanks to an ace, signed by Ekatrina Gamova, Russia was again in advantage 8-5 at the first break in the second period. Bulgarian Captain Strashimira Filipova answered with a block kill to level the game at 8-8. There was nothing to separate the two teams in this phase of the match. Bulgaria led 18-16, but Russia fought back bravely with two monster blocks. Gamova brought up set point at 24-23 for Russia, and some moments later Olga Fateeva finished the set with an ace in Russia's favor.

Russia kept the speed in the third set. The tall Russians didn't look back to close the set out 25-21, and the match 3-0.

Bulgaria Coach Dimo Tonev: "We are a very young team and for some of our players this was not only the first match in the European Championship, but the first match ever with the national jersey. I think we played very well and I hope we can have more luck in the next matches."

Bulgaria Captain Strashimira Filipova: "I think we did our best in this match, we fought a lot and we played with continuous strenght but it was not enough. It's not easy to play against Russia, but I think we can do even better."

Russia Coach Vladimir Kuzyutkin: "First of all congratulations to Bulgaria, it's very strange to play against a team that's so young but already so aggressive. In the first set we did our best, thanks to a very good block."

Russia Captain Maria Borisenko: "It's our first match and obviously we are not in our best shape, but I'm satisfied. Our attack was the key to win this tough match."
