Luxembourg record first win over Cyprus in 27 years at SCD Finals
2015 CEV Volleyball European Championship - Men

Luxembourg, June 21, 2015. The men’s national team of Luxembourg wrote a piece of history on Saturday at d’Coque in Luxembourg City as for the first time in 27 years the ‘Lions’ were able to edge arch-rivals Cyprus to further cement the value of the gold medal they claimed at the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) only a couple of weeks ago in Iceland. Cyprus did not compete there and so Luxembourg had it somehow easier in Reykjavik but their status as strongest side among the members of the Small Countries Division (SCD) was further confirmed on Saturday with their dramatic 3:2 win (26-24, 14-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-11) on the second day of the 2015 CEV Volleyball European Championship – Small Countries Division Final.

On Friday Luxembourg has started the competition with a 3:1 win over the Faroe Islands (25-14, 25-16, 17-25, 25-11) whilst Cyprus had easily downed Scotland in three consecutive sets (25-21, 25-21, 25-20).

The match played on Saturday at d’Coque was most likely going to determine the eventual winner of the competition though one last round of matches remains to be played on Sunday.

Back in 1985 as the inaugural GSSE were held in San Marino, Volleyball was part of the programme and two years later, once the Games took place in Monaco, Luxembourg lost to Cyprus in the semis. The very last victory for the men’s of the Grand Duchy over the team of Cyprus dated back to 1988 when they beat their Mediterranean opponents in the final of the tournament of the Small European Countries, a sort of primordial SCD competition.

After 27 years things changed on Saturday night when Luxembourg was able to edge Cyprus at the tie-break. “Even though the joy for today’s success is just overwhelming, the guys know that we still have one match to play on Sunday and Scotland is an opponent not to be underestimated,” explains coach Dieter Scholl. “We expect a tough match.”

Cyprus, on the other hand, will complete their duties in the tournament playing the Faroe Islands.
