European Cups DOL sets stage for exciting season ahead
2015 CEV European Cups - Men / Women

Luxembourg, Luxembourg, June 12, 2014.  The Drawing of Lots for the 2015 CEV Volleyball Cup and the 2015 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup in both genders, which took place on Thursday morning at the premises of the CEV Head Office in Luxembourg, provided for many interesting clashes across Europe.  The drawing was conducted by the European Cups Commission President and CEV Board of Administration member Riet Ooms in the presence of Giuseppe Cormio, General Manager of CMC RAVENNA, in the role of a neutral observer.

“The Drawing of Lots has been carried out according to the CEV regulations,” Riet Ooms stated upon completion of the procedure.  “Due to the current economic situation in many European countries, this year we paid some extra attention to applying the geographical principle, especially for the Challenge Cup, in order to reduce the costs of participation for the clubs.  I wish everybody good luck and a lot of success.”

“The teams were drawn as per the latest European Ranking List as well as by taking into consideration some geographical criteria so as to avoid very long and exhausting trips in the first rounds,” Giuseppe Cormio confirmed.  “This is very fair and at the same time it also reflects the current status of volleyball in Europe.  It seems to me that the strongest teams will have a relatively easy job up to the quarterfinals, but this is sports and surprises are always round the corner.  This is also the most interesting side of such competitions.  In the end you have to win on the court to make it to the last stage and I assume, like any other team, we all look forward to the start of the season.”

The presence of Giuseppe Cormio seemed to have brought good luck to his club’s team, making its return to the European Cups after 17 years.  CMC RAVENNA not only qualified directly for the sixteenthfinals of the men’s CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup receiving a bye as the top-ranked participant, but was also drawn to have the home-court advantage should it end up playing any golden sets for as long as they stay alive to participate in the competition.

The so-called 2nd Round of the men’s Challenge Cup, which in fact is the initial stage of the upcoming edition will feature some interesting fixtures, including three clashes between teams from the same country.  The fans in Cyprus will enjoy their grand derby between Anorthosis FAMAGUSTA and Omonia NICOSIA, but this time at a European level.  There will be a domestic duel in Austria as well, with Union Raiffeisen WALDVIERTEL facing UVC Holding GRAZ, and the battle between Rivo RIJSSEN and Abiant Lycurgus GRONINGEN will not be the only challenge between two teams from the Netherlands since in the women’s edition of the Challenge Cup VC SNEEK and Alterno APELDOORN will also measure up to each other in an all-Dutch affair.

The men’s CEV Volleyball Cup, the second most prestigious club competition in Europe after the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League, will also feature a clash between two squads from the same country as Ukraine’s Khimprom SUMY and Lokomotiv KHARKIV were drawn to face each other in the sixteenthfinals.  The women’s CEV Cup is the only one of the four that has not presented the opportunity for clubs to play international matches against their compatriots, but it features what is probably the most exciting fixture set up by today’s draw – between last season’s Champions League participants Dinamo Romprest BUCURESTI from Romania and MKS DABROWA GORNICZA from Poland.

The 2015 European Cups season is set to start on October 25, 2014 with the first leg of the 1st Round of the CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup - Women.  The other five competitions are all scheduled to start in November.
