Match schedule for inaugural European Games announced
2015 European Games

Luxembourg/Baku, Azerbaijan, May 18, 2015. The women’s national teams of Serbia and Croatia will open the Volleyball competition of the inaugural European Games on June 13 only a few hours after the Opening Ceremony that is scheduled for the night before. 12 teams per gender are set to compete in Baku from June 13 through 28 in an event that many have dubbed the most important addition to the international sporting calendar in 50 years. The start of the men’s tournament will follow 24 hours later on Sunday, June 14, with Italy and Slovakia being the first ones to take the court at the Crystal Hall (pictured), one of the most iconic venues of the Games.

As far as the home teams of Azerbaijan are concerned, the women will make their debut on June 13 playing Romania whilst the men – who have been on a permanent training camp since a few weeks already – will play Finland on Sunday, June 14, to celebrate their debut in the competition.

The six teams in each pool will play a single round robin, meaning that each team plays against each other once. The top four teams from each pool will qualify to the quarterfinals. The 1st in each pool will play against the 4th placed team from the opposite pool, and there will be a draw conducted to decide if the 2nd placed team in Pool A plays against the 2nd or the 3rd placed team in Pool B.  The team that is not drawn will play against the 3rd placed team from Pool A. The four winners of the quarterfinals will then play off in the semi-finals ensuring that should the top two teams from each pool qualify, the 1st placed team from Pool A will face the 2nd placed team from Pool B, and vice versa. The bronze and gold medal matches will then follow on June 27 and 28 for women and men, respectively.

“We are all looking forward to the start of the first, historic European Games,” CEV President André Meyer says. “We have been working really hard together with the local Organising Committee to make sure that Volleyball will deliver one of the highlights on the programme of the inaugural European Games. Azerbaijan is a country where our sport has grown enormously throughout the last few years and the European Games, together with the iconic venue set up at the Crystal Hall, will provide the ideal platform to raise the profile and image of our sport to the next level.”
