Preliminary Pools set for U19 Women Final Round
2016 CEV U19 Volleyball European Championship - Women

Nitra, Slovakia, May 25, 2016. The Drawing of Lots for the Final Round of the 2016 CEV U19 Volleyball European Championship – Women scheduled for August 27 – September 4 was held on Wednesday morning at the premises of the local Town Hall in Nitra. The DOL was attended by the Mayor of Nitra, Mr Jozef Dvonč, CEV Vice President and President of the Slovak Volleyball Federation Lubor Halanda, European Sports Organising Commission (ESOC) President Wojciech Czayka, Slovak Volleyball Federation Vice President Tomáš Singer and Hungarian Volleyball Federation Secretary General Zsolt Ludvig.

The 12 teams participating in the Final Round were drawn into two Pools of six each; after the preliminary phase the top two of each Pool will move on to the semis while the third and fourth-placed teams will play the classification matches 5-8. The semi-finals and finals as well as all classification matches will be contested in the western Slovakian city of Nitra.

The composition of the two preliminary pools reads as follows:

Pool 1 in Nitra (SVK):
Slovakia, Turkey, Belgium, France, Bulgaria, 2nd Best Round 3
Pool 2 in Györ (HUN): Hungary, Italy, Russia, Belarus, 1st 3rd Round Pool H, 1st 3rd Round Pool I

CEV Vice President and Slovak Volleyball Federation President Lubor Halanda said: “The organisation of the Drawing of Lots was very good and we are satisfied. It is hard to predict the real strength of Volleyball teams in this age category, but taking into consideration the results of the last international competitions we can say that our group looks just fine. We know that every team will be very strong, and therefore our goal is to progress to the second stage of the tournament. Nitra is a Volleyball city, because our men’s national champions come from this town and with the help of this championship we hope that Volleyball will continue to boom and flourish in Nitra.”

ESOC President Wojciech Czayka commented following completion of the Drawing of Lots: “Nitra is a very nice city. As the President of the Slovak Volleyball Federation Lubor Halanda said, I am sure that since the tournament has been placed under the patronage of the local mayor, who is a former Volleyball player, everything will be just perfect. In my opinion this is going to be a very nice tournament with the best European teams and at the same time a very good opportunity to promote Volleyball in Slovakia and Hungary. It will only help to develop women’s Volleyball in these countries.”
Eva Kosekova, head coach of Slovakia: “We can be satisfied with the draw, but we know it will be very hard, because all the best teams have already qualified to the Final Round and there are still a lot of high-quality teams in the third round of qualification. If we want to make it among the top eight, we need to perform at our very best. Every single opponent will be very hard to play.”

The third and last stage of the qualification process is scheduled for July 7-10; Serbia will host the national teams of Czech Republic, Poland and Finland in Vrnjačka Banja and Latvia will take on Slovenia, Germany and Croatia in Riga. The winners of each third-round pool as well as the second placed team with the best score across both pools will move on to the Final Round taking place in Slovakia and Hungary.

Serbia won the 2014 edition of the European Championship held in Estonia and Finland where Slovenia and Turkey claimed silver and bronze respectively.
