Drawing of Lots for #EuroVolleyU18M results in some very promising matchups
2018 CEV U18 Volleyball European Championship - Men

Luxembourg, February 8, 2018. The Drawing of Lots for the Final Round of the 2018 CEV U18 Volleyball European Championship – Men took place on Thursday at Zlín Castle in the Czech Republic. Zlín is one of two cities – together with Púchov in neighbouring Slovakia – hosting the tournament, which is to run from April 7 to 15. The Drawing of Lots divided the 12 participating teams in two pools of six each and set the tone for the start of the eagerly anticipated tournament.

Together with the co-hosting Czech Republic and Slovakia, the winners of the seven qualifying tournaments held in January will participate in the tournament (Greece, Turkey, Italy, Belarus, Bulgaria, Russia and Belgium), as well as the three best second placed teams (Ukraine, France and Germany) from the same qualifiers.

The teams were drawn as follows:

Pool I (Zlín, Czech Republic): Czech Republic, Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece, Belarus, Germany

Pool II (Púchov, Slovakia): Slovakia, Russia, Italy, Belgium, France, Ukraine

The first and second placed teams of both preliminary pools will be playing semi-finals before competing for the medals. The third and fourth-placed teams from each pool will be playing for places 5 to 8, whilst the fifth and sixth-placed teams will leave the tournament upon completion of the pool phase.

“It is a great honour for the Czech Republic to be hosting such a big tournament and that is why we are all very pleased,” said Marek Pakosta, President of the Czech Volleyball Federation.

The Mayor of Zlín, Mr Miroslav Adámek and Miroslav Kašný, member of the Council of Zlín Region, attended the ceremony as well. “For Zlín this championship is a very important event and I hope the tournament will be a success,” said Adámek. “We are very pleased with the opportunity to host this championship because we support sport a lot and that is why we make an attempt to provide the best conditions for all participating teams,” added Kašný.

The head coach of the Czech national team, Jiří Zach commented the result of the DoL: “I am satisfied with the draw; it seems to be somehow acceptable for us. We have the opportunity to achieve a good result in this championship and we will be trying our best to make this happen.”

Italy won gold at last year’s U17 European Championship held in Konya, Turkey, where Belgium and hosts Turkey completed the podium.
