Romanian party in #CEVCupW quarterfinals
2019 CEV Volleyball Cup - Women

Luxembourg, February 12, 2019. Two teams from Romania – Stiinta BACAU and CSM Volei Alba BLAJ – secured on Tuesday night their spot in the semis of the 2019 CEV Volleyball Cup – Women. Stiinta did so coming back from two sets down to edge VK UP OLOMOUC at the tiebreak for the second time in as many matches while BLAJ reversed the 0-3 loss from last week in Istanbul to stamp a 3-0 victory followed by a Golden Set win in their home matchup with pre-favourite Galatasaray ISTANBUL.

VK UP OLOMOUC (CZE) vs. Stiinta BACAU (ROU) 2-3 (25-21, 25-20, 20-25, 20-25, 16-18)

•    The hosts claimed the first set after scoring five points in a row towards the end.
•    The home team secured an early lead in the second set and they were able to hold on to it to storm to a 25-20 win.
•    However, the visitors from Romania did not give up in any way and responded by taking the following two sets by the same score (25-20) to call for a tiebreak.
•    VK UP OLOMOUC caught a promising start to the fifth set leading 8-4 at the side switch but failed to cash two match balls, before BACAU turned things around and with a second 3-2 win in as many matches, the Romanian team secured their spot in the semis.

CSM Volei Alba BLAJ (ROU) vs. Galatasaray ISTANBUL (TUR) 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-16); Golden Set 15-5

•    After all, history repeated itself! CSM Volei Alba BLAJ managed to record a victory against Galatasaray ISTANBUL and qualified for the semis of the CEV Cup.
•    As with the Champions League semi-finals in May 2018, Volei Alba BLAJ won against all odds, especially since Galatasaray had won the first leg, a week ago, 3-0.
•    In front of 1,700 spectators who created an electrifying atmosphere, Volei Alba BLAJ showed from the very beginning its intention to fight. The first set confirmed the hosts’ conviction that they could win the game, with the 25-20 victory adding to their morale.
•    However, the match grew in intensity towards the end of the second set, when Volei Alba BLAJ came back from 21-23 and won it 25-23. This moment proved decisive, the hosts flew on the field, while Galatasaray lost hope.
•    Volei Alba BLAJ easily won the third set (25-16) and then went into the Golden one. Here there was only one team on the field, with the hosts storming to a landslide 15-5 win.
•    In the semis, BLAJ will play another team from Romania, Știința BACAU.

Darko Zakoč, head coach of Volei Alba BLAJ: “We knew we could play better than we did in Istanbul, so we prepared the game together with the players, they played with their heart today, with more adrenaline, with more concentration and with much intelligence. It was very difficult to get to the Golden Set, but we won and it is a great victory for the team and for this city. We go forward without euphoria, we know our way, as we have overcome a very difficult obstacle, a team that is playing in a strong championship. We were disappointed when we lost in the Champions League earlier this season, but now in the CEV Cup we can reach the final.”

Nneka Onyejekwe, team captain of Volei Alba BLAJ: “It is an incredible sense of joy, we have shown to everyone that we can play at the highest level and I am very happy that we can keep up Romanian Volleyball with such a performance. We believed in our strengths, we were disappointed after the first leg in Turkey, but we managed to show our true value and got a deserved qualification.”

Sonja Newcombe, player of CSM Volei Alba BLAJ: “We knew we could come back, because we have a valuable team and today we have shown this. It is very nice to play in such matches, against opponents of this level. I am very happy for the qualification and for playing in front of such supporters, who were fantastic today, as they created an electrifying atmosphere and helped us a lot to win.”
