Trefl GDANSK take on Russian armada in #CLVolleyM ‘Match of the Week’

Luxembourg, March 11, 2019. After a short break, the 2019 CEV Volleyball Champions League – Men resumes with the quarterfinals, as eight teams are in contention and fighting for a spot at the historic Super Finals, which are due to take place at Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin on May 18. Pool D winners Trefl GDANSK host six-time CL champions Zenit KAZAN in the ‘Match of the Week’. Zenit KAZAN swept six matches in a row in Pool A and are on a winning streak in the competition that has been lasting for 29 matches since March 2016. •    Trefl GDANSK and Zenit KAZAN meet for the third time in the Champions League.
•    Zenit KAZAN defeated Trefl in both Playoff 12 meetings in 2015/16: 3-1 in Gdansk and 3-0 in Kazan.
•    For Trefl, these were their only previous CL matches against Russian opposition.
•    Zenit KAZAN have lost only four of their 16 CL matches versus teams from Poland, two against PGE Skra BELCHATOW and two against JASTRZEBSKI Wegiel.
•    Zenit KAZAN's defeat against PGE Skra in the Playoff 6 on 16 March 2016 was their last loss in the CL.


•    Trefl GDANSK are in this season's Champions League quarterfinals as they topped Pool D in the fourth round.
•    Trefl finished in joint-eighth place in their only previous CL participation, in 2015/16.
•    In eight of the last nine CL seasons, at least one Polish team reached the last four. The only exception in this run was the 2016/17 campaign.
•    A Polish team has yet to win the CL. The best result is a runners-up finish by PGE Skra BELCHATOW (2011/12) and Asseco Resovia RZESZÓW (2014/15).
•    Trefl are on a five-match winning streak in the CL, already their longest in the competition.
•    Two of Trefl's four CL defeats (W10-L4) came against Zenit KAZAN.
•    Maciej Muzaj scored 115 points in the fourth round this CL season, third-most behind Jolan Cox (123 for Greenyard MAASEIK) and György Grozer (118 for Zenit SAINT PETERSBURG).
•    In the fourth round, Piotr Nowakowski (62.75%) had the best spiker efficiency, while Michal Kozlowski (61.76%) had the second-best setter efficiency behind Zenit KAZAN's Alexander Butko (62.50%).


•    Zenit KAZAN reached this season's Champions League quarterfinals by topping Pool A in the fourth round.
•    Zenit have won a record six CL titles, including four in the last four seasons: 2007/08, 2011/12, 2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2017/18.
•    Zenit have reached the last four in each of the last eight CL campaigns, since an eighth place in 2009/10.
•    Zenit are on a CL record winning streak of 29 matches, which started on 24 March 2016. Their last defeat in the competition was a 3-2 against PGE Skra BELCHATOW in the Playoff 6 on 16 March 2016.
•    Zenit (110) have won the most CL matches on the men's side, leading Cucine Lube CIVITANOVA (86) and VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN (86) (all excl. 2019 quarter-finals).
•    Zenit have won at least two sets in each of their last 50 CL matches, since a 3-1 defeat against JASTRZEBSKI Wegiel on 23 March 2014.
•    In the fourth round, Alexander Butko (62.50%) the best setter efficiency and Earvin Ngapeth (17) scored the most aces.
