Juantorena, Sokolov drive Lube to dramatic #CLVolleyM win in Moscow
2019 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Men

Luxembourg, March 12, 2019.  Five sets of play or almost two and a quarter hours were needed to complete the first quarterfinal clash between Dinamo MOSCOW and Cucine Lube CIVITANOVA of the 2019 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Men. With Osmany Juantorena and Tsvetan Sokolov in the pilots’ cabin, the Italian squad emerged victorious with a 3-2 (25-10, 23-25, 23-25, 25-18, 15-13) edge over their Russian hosts.

Dinamo MOSCOW (RUS) vs. Cucine Lube CIVITANOVA (ITA) 2-3 (10-25, 25-23, 25-23, 18-25, 13-15)

•    The beginning of the first set was catastrophic for Dinamo MOSCOW. Cucine Lube CIVITANOVA burst into the match with an 8-0 run with Bruno Rezende behind the serving line, and went on to close the set at a landslide 25-10 with Osmany Juantorena and Tsvetan Sokolov tallying seven points each.
•    The second set was very tricky for both teams. Dinamo took an early 8-3 lead. Lube regained control for a 20-17 advantage, but eventually the Russian side won the set by 25-23.
•    The third set was a race between the two teams’ opposites. Dinamo’s Romanas Shkulyavichus and Lube’s Tsvetan Sokolov scored eight points each, but it was Shkulyavichus who scored the winner for another 25-23 close.
•    Dinamo looked exhausted in the fourth set and Lube used it to win the set by 25-18 with a six-point contribution from Juantorena.
•    The last set was tight and very nervous. At the beginning of the set there was a long pause for a video challenge. Lube maintained a slight lead for the most part of the tie-breaker and eventually won the set by the narrowest of margins – 15-13.
•    Osmany Juantorena and Tsvetan Sokolov, stringing up 24 and 23 points, respectively, were the best scorers of the match.
•    The return game at the Eurosuole Forum in Civitanova Marche will take place on March 21, starting at 20:30 local time.

Dick Kooy, outside hitter of Dinamo MOSCOW: "The first set we started very nervous. Lube had all rights to win the set as they were playing at a high level, and we weren’t. Then we started to play much better. We put up a fight, we used our chances and extended the match to five sets. It is too bad we didn’t win the fifth set. Lube are a very strong team, but we will try to win the second game there. We will train well and play well, and we will see what happens. We have a few days to prepare for this game. It will be a big game."

Ferdinando De Giorgi, head coach of Cucine Lube CIVITANOVA: "This game was very tough for us. I know that Dinamo are a very good team. Today they played very well in defence. Unbelievable defence! My team made a lot of mistakes in attack. We normally play better in attack. It was a good match for us since we won it. It will be very difficult to prepare for the next match with Dinamo because we will have a very important match in the Italian league when we arrive at home. After it, we will think about the next game with Dinamo and prepare for it."
