ZAGREB victorious in #CLVolleyW Match of the Week, TIRANA win first-ever Champions League match

Luxembourg, October 9, 2019.  The first leg of Round 2 of the CEV Champions League Volley 2020 - Women was concluded on Wednesday evening, Mladost ZAGREB (CRO) and Partizani TIRANA (ALB) claimed their first wins of the campaign. The Croatian team won the first two sets of the Match of the Week against Khimik YUZHNY (UKR) very convincingly, in the third they had to come back from seven points behind to win (25-17, 25-17, 27-25). In the other match of the day, Partizani TIRANA made the most out of their #CLVolleyW debut, as they beat ZOK Bimal-Jedinstvo BRČKO of Bosnia and Herzegovina 3-1 (15-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-20). The 2020 Champions League season kicked off on Tuesday by Luka BAR (MNE) and Vasas Röplabda Kft. BUDAPEST, which was won 3-0 by the Hungarian side.

  • The crowd of 650 in Zagreb saw the home team delivering an emphatic start to the first two sets, both of them resulting in an 8-1 lead. The hosts cruised to victory in those sets, 25-17 on both occasions. Khimik YUZHNY gave it their all in the third set, forcing Mladost ZAGREB to the limit. The Ukrainian champions took a seven-point lead, but saw the gap closed towards the end of the set. On the third match point for the home side, Khimik failed to hit the target and the win was for ZAGREB.
  • Four of Mladost's players scored more than ten points, the best performance was by Valentina Vrbanc who managed to put 17 to her name. 
  • The women’s team of Partizani TIRANA made their historic debut in the Champions League, playing the reigning national champions of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This was the maiden appearance for any Albanian team in the Champions League.
  • Head coach Nejat Sancak of Partizani TIRANA looked ahead to the return match next Wednesday: "The return match is going to be tough, but I have faith in the team and the fact that we now know our rival better."
