CLVolleyW - Nantes start 2020 the best way whereas Cannes lose their first match
CEV Champions League Volley 2020 - Women

Luxembourg, January 21, 2020. More than one month after their last CEV Champions League match, four teams resumed their European adventures on Tuesday, including the two French representatives, Nantes VB and RC Cannes. They were respectively hosting Vasas Óbuda BUDAPEST and Uralochka-NTMK EKATERINBURG.

After two wins out of three games, the players coached by experienced Cyril Ong hoped to take a third victory against Budapest, that they had already beaten 3-0 in Hungary. After a slow start -- with a close 25-23 for the French in the first set, and Jakub Gluszak's women taking the second one in a commanding manner (15-25), the squad ranked second in Pool D won the match in four sets. They could count on a solid Lucille Gicquel, their opposite, who proved once again decisive for her team with 22 points.

In the second match of the evening, leader of Pool E and former Champions League winner RC Cannes suffered the first defeat of their European campaign against the Russian squad of Ekaterinburg (2-3). In a tight game exceeding two hours, Karpol's players were led by Kseniia Parubets and her astonishing 39 points in the match, with no fewer than 79 sets delivered to her. On the French side, Mira Todorova scored 21, including six blocks and one ace. Cannes are still leading the pool but could be matched by Dinamo MOSCOW on Thursday if they win against Maritza PLOVDIV.

Match by match

Nantes VB (FRA) vs Vasas Óbuda BUDAPEST (HUN) 3-1 (25-23, 15-25, 25-22, 25-18)

RC CANNES (FRA) vs Uralochka-NTMK EKATERINBURG (RUS) 2-3 (26-24, 22-25, 21-25, 25-21, 13-15)

"We fought well and really lost on small details, such as reception at some key moments of the match. Parubets performed extremely well. Of course, it’s always disappointing to lose, but despite the loss, we've earned one point which may prove important for the qualification at the end."
Riccardo Marchesi, RC Cannes' Head Coach
