Check out results of the DOL, Baku to host women's final four
2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Men & Women

Vienna, Austria, July 1, 2011. The Drawing of Lots for the 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League was staged tonight at the Uniqa Tower in Vienna. Preceded by a presentation of CEV President André Meyer who recapped the main facts and figures of a memorable and stellar 2011 season, the DOL assigned a total of 44 participating teams to the preliminary Pools of the League Round that is set to start in mid October (men) and late November (women). Moreover, Mr. Meyer surprised a bit the many illustrious guests and officials by announcing that the organization of the women’s final four has been already allotted to the capital city of Azerbaijan, Baku. As a result of this, the competition formula will be adapted according to the provisions outlined in the Official Regulations, thereby having 8th finals and 4th finals following the League Round before the best 4 teams compete for the crown.
Azerbaijan – a country which is literally fond of Volleyball and whose best team, Rabita BAKU, was the runner-up of last year’s campaign will be playing host to such a unique Volleyball festival for the first time in history.
Mr. Meyer stressed that with this decision the European Volleyball Confederation will be expanding its horizons and also fulfilling the dream of the whole Azerbaijani Volleyball family, whose teams have been literally standing out last year, with Azerrail claiming a derby in the final game of the Challenge Cup edging the archrivals of Lokomotiv BAKU.
As for the DOL, detailed results are available in the attached PDF file.
Triple winner TRENTINO Diatec of Italy will be crossing the ways of Zaksa KEDZIERZYN-KOZLE, CAI TERUEL and Serbian rookie Partizan Termoelektro BEOGRAD. “We are happy with the results of the DOL” said local Organizing Director Iris Wintzek. “Anyway, only the final game really counts and to make it there you have to cruise past all of Europe’s best teams”.
As for the women’s division, 2010 champion VakifGunesTTelekom ISTANBUL will be playing Italy’s record holder Volley BERGAMO, with that group (Pool D) including also Romania’s rookie 2004 Tomis CONSTANTA and Azerrail BAKU. Pool B will feature a series of very interesting clashes with Rabita testing out the likes of FenerbahceAcibadem ISTANBUL, the winner of the 2010 FIVB Club World Championships in Doha, Qatar. “We are very happy to play a great team like Fenerbahce” said the President of France’s ASPTT MULHOUSE, Gérard Reeb. “We will once again welcome some friends from Istanbul and this is great for the local Volleyball fans. Rabita BAKU is also a stellar team and I am sure that the travel to Azerbaijan will be an interesting experience for our girls. I think DRESDNER SC will be our rival for the third spot at stake to make it to the 8th finals. This time we want to make it through the League Round and with such great opponents everything is there for a great Volleyball show for the benefit of our supporters and sponsors”.

The winners of the 2011 Press Award associated to the past season – Generali UNTERHACHING and Voléro ZÜRICH - were also honored within the frame of the European Volleyball Gala co-hosted by the Austrian Volleyball Federation (OeVV) and the CEV. “This is to show our praise and appreciation for teams that have been delivering a great work” said CEV President André Meyer “and also to invite all other participating clubs to reach for the best”.

The Gala did also feature some show acts – starring local singer Cornelia Mooswalder – and special actions specifically conceived to spread around additional info about the EuroVolley 2011 that Austria will jointly organize with the Czech Republic in a couple of months. The official anthem of the Championship that will run through September 10-18 was played for the first time at the Uniqa Tower with the Austrian national team mentored by head coach Michael Warm being also in attendance.
Special guests of that evening were Austria’s Sports Minister Norbert Darabos and Christian Oxonitsch, Vienna’s City Councilor for Sports, who were joined by quite many other VIPs, including also FIVB 2nd Executive Vice President Theofanis Tsiokris, who helped CEV Vice President Riet Ooms on stage by drawing some teams for the women’s competition.
