Asterix KIELDRECHT and Precura ANTWERPEN claim Belgium’s national cups
News from the National Federations

Antwerpen, Belgium, February 10, 2014.  The Lotto Arena in Antwerpen was already sold out two months before the Belgian volleyball cup finals.  The 5500 spectators did not regret their attendance as they saw two excellent games.  Asterix KIELDRECHT claimed the women’s national cup and Precura ANTWERPEN triumphed with the trophy on the men’s side.

Asterix, the women’s team of national coach Gert Vande Broek, defeated surprising finalist Richa MICHELBEKE by 3:1 (25-14, 19-25, 25-20, 25-19) to win the cup for the 11th time in the history of the club.

The men’s final was a real thriller and ended with Precura ANTWERPEN as the winner for the first time in their history.  They emerged victorious against heavy favorite Knack ROESELARE with a final score of 3:2 (22-25, 25-16, 15-25, 25-22, 28-26) shaped up after 2 hours and 20 minutes of play.

Three sets of a not so high quality volleyball, with nervous performances on both sides of the net, were followed by an exciting end of the match. In the three sets Knack managed to take control over the attacks of Precura’s star Mads Ditlevsen, but in the money time the Danish international was at his best.  His excellent scoring and defensive play helped his team win the fourth set and in the tiebreak he was once again an important contributor to his team’s victory.

In the decisive fifth set both teams showed equal qualities. On the Knack side it was Hendrik Tuerlinckx who was the danger for Precura’s blockers.  Eventually he became the top scorer of the final with 29 points and was declared the Most Valuable Player of the match.  But at 27-26, after Knack had missed the chance to win their 9th Belgian cup by not taking advantage of five match points, it was a kill block by Tom Van Walle on an attack from Tuerlinckx that finished the tiebreak on the ninth match point for Precura.  Tom van Walle, the twin brother of Belgian international Gert Van Walle, was the top scorer of his team with 19 points.
