Tomis wins fifth title in Romanian national league
News from the clubs

Constanta, Romania, April 17, 2014. Tomis CONSTANTA retained its title in Romania’s national league thereby finishing atop the charts for the fifth time in the club’s history. The Championship series with CSVM ZALAU ended after only three rounds with the players mentored by Bulgarian head coach Martin Stoev scoring a 3:0 victory in the last match. This way Tomis could also book their spot in the 2015 edition of the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League; the team from the Black Sea will be making their third consecutive appearance in Europe’s elite club competition.

After making the semis of the 2014 CEV Volleyball Cup where they lost to eventual winners PARIS Volley, Tomis started the Championship series by routing ZALAU in straight sets on April 11 (25-23, 25-21, 26-24) and by 3:2 one day later (25-14, 25-16, 22-25, 22-25, 15-11). On Thursday night Tomis edged past ZALAU with another 3:0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-18) to secure their title.

“We deserved this victory. We really hoped to finish it off with this match because we all wanted to spend Easter at home with our families,” head coach Martin Stoev said. “The difference between Tomis and all other Romanian teams was evident throughout the season and not only during the Playoffs. We have been working very hard to win this title and had to play many matches within a short period of time. We have been travelling a lot but it was well worth it.”

“Though it may sound arrogant, the match on Thursday did reveal the difference in class and quality between Tomis and ZALAU. We end this season with outstanding results: we won three matches in the prelims of the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League, we played the semis of the CEV Cup, and we won the Romanian cup and national league,” said the club’s Executive Director Serhan Cadar. “It was a season filled up with joy where we only regret that we missed on the final of the CEV Cup.”
