Russia’s women keep top spot of European Ranking despite missing out on World Champs medal
News from the CEV

Luxembourg, October 15, 2014. The European Ranking for women’s national teams was recently updated following completion of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship Italy 2014. Though they could not retain the crown they had claimed in 2006 and 2010, 2013 European champions Russia still keep the top spot of the charts with 334 points followed by Serbia and Italy who share second place on 324. Russia and Serbia will represent Europe at next year’s FIVB World Cup in Japan where the first tickets to the 2016 Rio Olympics will be at stake. The tie between Serbia and Italy is broken by Serbia’s performance at last year’s European Championship where the Balkan team ended up in fourth place whereas Italy had to be content with sixth place.

The complete European Ranking is available here. This ranking will be used also to determine some of the teams entering the Volleyball tournament of the inaugural European Games which are due to take place in Baku, Azerbaijan from June 12 to 28, 2015.

Apart from Serbia moving from third to second place in the ranking, Croatia’s strong showing at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship was enough to gain them three places and move up to the eighth spot of the ranking. The “Yellow Tigers” of Belgium continued their march towards reaching the continental elite, improving by another two spots on their previous tenth place. The Czech Republic and Romania, on the other hand, went down by three after missing out on participation in the Final Round of the World Championship.

The latest European Ranking takes into consideration the teams’ performance at the 2011 and 2013 editions of the CEV Volleyball European Championship, the 2012 Olympics, their results in the 2014 FIVB World Grand Prix/CEV Volleyball European League as well as the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship which came to a close last Sunday after three weeks of exciting actions in six different cities across the Italian peninsula.
