Ioana-Alexandra Ordean and Adriana Melniciuc are two of Romania’s best Beach Volleyball players. They represented their country in the first round of the 2014-2016 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup and did so at the Pool E tournament held last June in Schinias, Greece.

On the final day of the competition, they accounted for an act of fair play which epitomises the core message and quintessence of the CEV “Fair Play Volleyball Way” campaign. As they were playing a Belarusian team for second place in the final standing of the competition, one of their opponents – Viktoryia Siakretava – suffered a muscle strain on her back by the time she and partner Viktoryia Shalayeuskaya were only two points away from winning the match. Siakretava collapsed on the court and a medical time-out was requested by the Belarusian team.

A physician provided Siakretava with some treatment but she still suffered much pain as the actions resumed. Siakretava was due to serve as the game re-started and out of respect for the pain she was suffering, Ordean and Melniciuc let their opponents easily score the last two points they were missing to take the game home. This way the team from Belarus finished the tournament in second place and was promoted to the third round of the competition scheduled for next year.

“Ms Ordean and Ms Melniciuc literally embody the core message of the CEV “Fair Play Volleyball Way” campaign like nobody else has done throughout the past 12 months,” Mr Meyer said. “For this reason our Confederation is pleased to present these young players with the CEV “Fair Play Award” in front of delegates from as many as 48 members of our Volleyball family hoping that they stand as an example to look at for the international sports community.”
