CEV launches bidding process for Continental Olympic qualifiers
2016 Olympic Games - European Qualification

Luxembourg, December 19, 2014. The European Volleyball Confederation launched on Thursday the bidding process for the organisation of the two Continental Qualification Tournaments – one per gender – for the Rio Olympics scheduled for early January 2016.

These tournaments will mark the second step of the Olympic qualification process after the FIVB Volleyball World Cup due to take place in August/September 2015 in Japan where three European men’s teams – Russia, Italy, and Poland – and two women’s teams – Russia and Serbia – will be trying to seize one of two tickets at stake to join hosts Brazil for the Volleyball competition of the 2016 Olympics. The eventual winners of the eight-team strong Continental Qualification Tournaments starring the host country and the seven highest placed teams from the CEV European Ranking List – as of November 1, 2015 – not already qualified will also book their spot for the Olympics.

The second and third placed teams of the events scheduled for January 4-9 (women) and 5-10 (men), 2016 will the get an extra opportunity to crown their Olympic dream by joining the World Olympic Qualification Tournaments – combined with the Asian Continental Olympic Qualification – that are due to take place in May/June 2016 in Japan. The best Asian team and the three highest placed teams – regardless of their Continent of origin – at the end of that competition will all claim a spot in the Olympic tournament.

The European Volleyball Confederation has produced detailed terms and conditions for National Federations interested in the organisation of the Continental Olympic Qualification Tournaments. A useful reference document for all potential applicants is available here. All applications must be received by March 16, 2015.

“As you well know, it is the ultimate dream of every athlete to participate in the Olympic Games, the experience of a lifetime! Many national teams have been working really hard already over the last couple of years so that their members can pursue their Olympic dream and the fulfilment of this goal is strictly interconnected with the Continental Qualification Tournaments that are scheduled to take place in Europe in early January 2016,” CEV President André Meyer says. “We know that many of our member Federations are interested in providing their teams with a chance to chase that Olympic berth before the home crowd and with this in mind we are now opening the bidding process to organise the tournaments whose eventual winners will book that highly coveted and much desired ticket to Rio 2016,” he continues.

“It is going to be the opportunity of a lifetime for players and coaches who will be vying for that Olympic ticket playing before their fans and enjoying that extra boost they may need to accomplish their mission! It is also a rare opportunity that our Federations can give themselves to host an Olympic qualifying event with the unique allure that goes along with it! Therefore I invite them to read carefully the pages that we have put together and to study the terms and conditions we have set for the organisation of the 2016 European Olympic Qualification Tournaments. I am confident that many will come back to us with high-profile plans to turn these events into one of the real highlights of the 2016 season in the lead-up to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro where European teams will be trying to improve on the outstanding results they achieved at London 2012,” the CEV President concludes.
