Indesit European Championships Starts in Russia

Luxembourg, 5th September 2007

The 25th edition of the Men’s European Championships is ready to unfold from the 6th to the 16th of September 2007 in St-Petersburg and Moscow. This new edition of one of Europe’s most valuable volleyball events will for the first time be organized in Russia. For the first time also, 16 European teams will have the privilege of playing to win their place on the podium.

Titled European Champion 12 times since 1948, Russia will have at last the honor of organizing this prestigious event on its territory, as well as the 2007 CEV General Assembly which will take place on 14th September in Moscow.

The Director of the Sports Events Department of the city of Moscow, Mr. Mikhail Stepanianz underlined the great importance of this organization:

“ We are very glad that such important and wonderful event, which we considerately prepared, will be held in Moscow. Volleyball has become more spectacular and popular in recent years. We hope that coming Championship will attract new fans, consolidate Moscow and St. Petersburg  both in human aspect and in sport sphere, and also it increase children’s desire to go in for sports. Moscow proposed itself as a candidate for Youth Olympic Games 2010, and for us it is motivation to draw youth interest to sport, to add to our city more sport charm and gloss. We are looking forward to September 6 to invite volleyball fans to the magnificent sport hall “Olimpijski". ”

For the first time in the history of this competition, 16 teams will participate in this event: Russia as organizer, Italy, Serbia, Spain, Poland, Greece and France were directly qualified through their ranking in the last European Championships in Rome (ITA) in 2005.

The list of participants who will shine light on this final phase in Russia is completed by the teams of Belgium, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Croatia, The Netherlands, Slovenia and Germany who qualified themselves during the qualifications played in May 2006.

The final round shall consist of the preliminary pools, the playoff pools, the semi-final matches, the final and the classification matches

The teams allocated to the 4 preliminary pools (A, B, C and D) shall compete following the principle “one against each other” in one single round. The teams classified 4th in each pool shall be automatically eliminated from the Final Round. The teams classified 1st, 2nd and 3rd will be qualified to the Playoff pools E and F.

In the Playoff pools (E and F), the teams will again compete “one against each other” in a single round, taking into account the fact that the results of the matches already played between the qualifications in the previous pool will be counted towards the final ranking. The teams classified 6th, 5th, 4th and 3rd in each playoff pool will be automatically eliminated from the final round. The first two teams classified in each Playoff pool will qualify for the semi-finals.

The semi-finals and finals matches will then designate the new European champion.

These European Championships will be interesting on more than one account, taking also into consideration the fact that the champion will automatically win its participation right to the World Cup which will be organized in Japan in November 2007. The 3 best teams of the World Cup will then be directly qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

The competition in Russia will also benefit from a wide television coverage, established in close collaboration with the media partner of the European Volleyball Confederation, In front Sports in Italy.
