Dinamo KRASNODAR write history with first Russian Cup title
News from the National Federations

Krasnodar, Russia, December 31, 2014. After causing a first sensation in the semi-final where they had edged Dinamo MOSCOW by 3:1, the home heroines of Dinamo KRASNODAR – Russia’s representative in the 2015 CEV Volleyball Cup – completed their triumphal campaign at the Final Six of the Russian Cup by winning the title for the first time in 20 years after claiming a dramatic final match with Omichka OMSK REGION (26-28, 25-22, 25-20, 19-25, 15-11).

Omichka had actually caused the major sensation in the other semi-final cruising to a 3:1 victory over Russia’s multiple champions – and winners of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League and FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship – Dinamo KAZAN.

The ‘big final’ started with Dinamo KRASNODAR playing strong but their rivals not willing to give in; Dinamo could not capitalise on three set balls at 24:21 with Omichka coming back strong to make it 24 all and then score the last points to take the set home (26-28).

As the tension and the emotions were rising, the head coach of Omichka, Zoran Terzic, received a yellow card at the beginning of the second set. World-class Volleyball was on display for the fans in attendance at Olimp sports hall and the score remained tight up to the first technical break. Only once the second mandatory stop was called Dinamo had claimed a mini-break leading the way by 16:13; at 18:20, Terzic received a red card and had therefore to leave the court, with the leadership of the team being taken over by his assistant Zeljko Bulatovic. This series of events caused a drop in focus among the players of Omichka and Fernanda Garay brought the second set to an end for KRASNODAR (25-22).

Dinamo stretched momentum to the early stages of the third set (8:6) but after that Omichka scored three consecutive points to reduce their gap from 9:13 to 12:13. Konstantin Ushakov, the head coach of Dinamo, stopped the game and he did a good job in briefing his players who controlled it all the way through to the final 25-20 sealed by one of their superstars, Tatiana Kosheleva.

It looked like Dinamo had full control of the game as they were leading by 8:6 also in the fourth set, with Fernanda Garay shining in attack and being well supported by the defence line. However, halfway through, Omichka came back strong moving to the front at 17:16 to widen then their lead (21:18); Garay was then blocked to contribute a series of set balls for Omichka (24:18) and the second was eventually cashed by Daria Isaeva (25-19).

The winner of the Russian Cup was then to be determined at the tie-break. Dinamo and Omichka put on a real battle with the score remaining tight up to 12:11 for the home side. The hosts broke away for the first time at 13:11 with a terrific block and then did not look back anymore to win their first title in history (15-11).

Dinamo KAZAN, on the other hand, ended their campaign with a disappointing fourth place, losing also the bronze medal match to their arch-rivals of Dinamo MOSCOW (1:3; 16-25, 15-25, 25-18, 13-25).
