CEV confirms line-up for 2015 European League
2015 CEV Volleyball European League - Men & Women

Luxembourg, January 30, 2015. The 2015 edition of the CEV Volleyball European League will continue the success story of the competition established back in 2004 as 12 men’s and six women’s national teams will be vying for the highest honours with the eventual winners claiming the right to join the 2016 FIVB Volleyball World League and FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix, respectively. The 12 men’s teams were divided into two groups of six each and will be playing a single round robin to determine the teams making the final stage whilst the six women’s squads will also play a single round robin in one and the same pool before the top sides move on to the Final Four tournament.

The composition of the two pools for the men’s competition reads as follows:

Pool A: Poland, F.Y.R. of Macedonia, Estonia, Austria, Denmark, Israel
Pool B: Slovenia, Turkey, Greece, Belarus, Croatia, Romania

Last year’s silver medallists Greece are returning to the European League hoping to claim gold this time around after losing the 2014 final matches to Montenegro. The two semi-finalists from last year – the F.Y.R. of Macedonia and Slovenia – will be among the top favourites for the European League crown this year whilst Estonia are celebrating their comeback after their last appearance back in 2006.
The competition will get underway on July 3 for Pool A and on July 10 for Pool B as the participating teams have been given six weekends to play their respective five matches, which means that each team will have one weekend off. It was also decided that – as much as they wished – the higher-ranked teams as per the current European Ranking for national teams had the option to play more matches at home than the lower-ranked.
The Final Four tournament – venue still to be determined – is scheduled for the weekend of August 15-16, 2015.

The line-up for the 2015 CEV Volleyball European League – Women reads as follows:

Pool A: Turkey, Poland, Israel, Greece, Hungary and Georgia.

Georgia are making their debut in the European League as the team from this country is stepping up the efforts to prepare for the Final Round of the 2017 CEV Volleyball European Championship – Women that Georgia will co-host together with Azerbaijan. As for Turkey, after successfully completing their chase for a first European League title last year, they will return to the same stage hoping to add yet another accolade to their resume. Hungary, on the other hand, will be using the European League as an opportunity to prepare for the Final Round of the 2015 CEV Volleyball European Championship – Women where they are returning for the first time since the 1987 edition of Europe’s premier Volleyball competition.
The women’s European League will start on July 31 with five weekends of action before the top teams compete in the Final Round in early September.

“I am particularly pleased with the line-up we have put together for this year’s European League,” said CEV President André Meyer after chairing a meeting with representatives of all participating teams held on Friday morning in Luxembourg City. “This competition provides everyone with an opportunity to develop their national teams, to play some high-quality matches and vie for a spot in the next edition of the World League and World Grand Prix, which makes it even more attractive for up-and-coming countries to continue their efforts to join the world’s Volleyball elite.”
