97,22,9

Luxembourg, September 20, 2004. As the Senior European Championships Qualification rounds came to an end last weekend the following teams have qualified for the Final Round: Portugal, Croatia, Spain, Greece, the Czech Republic, and the Ukraine in the men’s, as well as Spain, Romania, Russia, Italy, Azerbaijan, Serbia Montenegro, and Bulgaria in the women’s.

The men’s qualification process for the 2005 Senior European Championships, which will take place from 2-11 September 2005 in Italy and Serbia Montenegro, was split into four pools of four teams each where the four best ranked teams together with the two best second ranked teams qualified for the remaining six places in the Final Round. Whilst Portugal, Croatia, Greece, and the Czech Republic went through as pool leaders, Spain and the Ukraine qualified as second best from Pool 2, respectively Pool 4, beating the other two second ranked teams, Germany and Bulgaria, on points. The six qualified teams will now join the already qualified teams of Italy, Serbia Montenegro, France, Russia, Poland, and the Netherlands in the Final Round.

The women’s qualification rounds for the 2005 Senior European Championships was split into three pools of four teams each. The two best of each pool and the best third ranked team joined defending champion Poland, as well as Turkey, Germany, the Netherlands and Croatia in the Final Round from 16-25 September 2005. In Pool 1, which was played in a home and away format, Spain and Romania surprisingly beat the Russians for the first two spots, so that Russia had to wait for the other pools to finish their matches to see if they would still be able to qualify as best third ranked team. Italy and Azerbaijan clearly qualified from Pool 2, as did Pool 3 leader Serbia Montenegro whilst the Bulgarians only beat the Czech Republic for second place in Pool 3 by sets. According to points Russia finally gained their place in the Final Round as the best third ranked team, being ahead of the Ukraine and the Czech Republic by match wins.
