CEV Board confirms organisers of Continental Olympic Qualification Tournaments, adopts further measures to foster growth of the sport
News from the CEV

Moscow, Russia, May 30, 2015. The CEV Board of Administration had on Saturday this year’s second plenary meeting in Russia’s capital right by the time Moscow is playing host to a FIVB Grand Slam tournament. Europe’s high-ranking Volleyball officials had a busy agenda to go through as they continue to join their forces to foster a further growth of the sport across the continent, with a primary focus on its development at the grassroots level.

After reviewing the results of the bidding process, the Board eventually confirmed the organisers of the Continental Olympic Qualification Tournaments scheduled for January 4-9 and 5-10, 2016 for women and men, respectively. Germany – and more specifically the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin – and Turkey – the venue being the Baskent Volleyball Hall in Ankara – will be hosting the men’s and women’s Olympic qualifiers, respectively. Apart from the host countries, another seven teams – determined as per the European Ranking that will be released after completion of this year’s European Championships – will join the quest for the sole spot at stake to make it to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The second and third-placed teams of each tournament will have another chance to crown their Olympic dreams by participating in the World Olympic Qualification Tournaments that will be held in late May/early June 2016 in Japan.

The CEV Board of Administration members were particularly pleased with the decision taken by the FIVB Board earlier this month in Lausanne whereby provisional recognition was granted to the Volleyball Federation of Kosovo. Waiting for its full membership to be approved at next year’s FIVB Congress in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Europe’s Volleyball family has invited Kosovo to register one team per gender in the 2016 edition of the European Cups. This is about to turn into reality with Kosovo men’s and women’s national champions expected to participate in the 2016 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup whose Drawing of Lots is scheduled for next Friday, June 5 in Luxembourg.

The provisional budget for 2016 was also adopted by the Board members and will now be forwarded for final approval to the CEV General Assembly which is due to take place in mid-October in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The Board also reviewed the final reports provided upon completion of the 2015 CEV U18 Women / U19 Men Volleyball European Championships held earlier this year in Bulgaria and Turkey, respectively. These countries provided Europe’s stars in the making with the perfect stage where to celebrate their international debut with Russia and Poland further cementing their status as Volleyball strongholds by claiming the gold medals in the women’s and men’s competition, respectively.

Europe’s Volleyball family continues its work also to further improve the quality and appeal of both the European Cup competitions and the ‘senior’ European Championships. Two working groups were held in early March in Luxembourg City thereby gathering all stakeholders to collect inputs for an eventual review of the format of these competitions and the Board members were pleased with the outcome of the discussions as well as with the many ideas that were brought up in these meetings. The work is now due to continue in the coming months before any major changes are submitted to the CEV Board of Administration for approval.

The CEV continue to extend their portfolio of Volleyball and Beach Volleyball competitions, with a focus on age groups and youth players. With this in mind, the Board endorsed a proposal prepared by the European Sports Organising Commission (ESOC) so that for the 2017 edition of the U23 World Championships, the teams representing Europe will be determined via two qualification tournaments starring four teams each that will be played in July 2016. The participants of these European qualifiers will be determined according to the European Ranking for U19 women’s / U20 men’s national teams.

The 2015 Beach Volleyball season – and more specifically the 2015 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship – will feature another two stops with Masters set to take place in Baku, Azerbaijan and in Milan, Italy. As it was recently announced, the F.Y.R. of Macedonia will host a first international Beach Volleyball tournament later this summer with Skopje being the venue for the Satellite scheduled for August 19-23. Beach Volleyball is increasingly developing in the Balkan area with the Romanian city of Timisoara also due to host a CEV women’s-only Satellite earlier in August. On top of this, the Snow Volleyball Tour so far organised by Austrian promoter Chaka which has grown incredibly fast over the last couple of years will in future continue its development under the umbrella provided by the CEV.

The meeting of the Board included also a review of the work performed over the last three months by the various CEV Commissions whose term will come to an end later this year as the CEV General Assembly scheduled for mid-October in Sofia is an elective one.

“We are well on track for another successful year for Volleyball and Beach Volleyball,” says CEV President André Meyer. “Our sport continues to be a benchmark in terms of dynamism and more actions are set to follow in order to build momentum on the success of the past months. We are determined to blend elite sport with the necessary attention to be deserved to its sustainable growth and its development at the grassroots level. Finally, I would like to thank my colleagues for all their work and will continue to rely on their support as we are about to enter the last months of our mandate before an elective Congress follows later this year in Sofia.”
