Giani gathers Slovenian Volleyball heroes ahead of World League debut
News from the National Federations

Ljubljana/Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, May 2, 2016. Slovenia men’s Volleyball national team just gathered in Kranjska Gora to start with the preparations for their first ever appearance in the FIVB Volleyball World League. Slovenia claimed a historic silver medal at last year’s men’s EuroVolley in Sofia and before that recorded a terrific winning streak of 12 straight matches in the 2015 CEV Volleyball European League, topping the podium at the Final Four tournament held in Walbrzych, Poland. As a result, Slovenia have set only one goal for this season – to win Group 3 of the 2016 FIVB World League.

Team Slovenia, coached by Italian Volleyball legend Andrea Giani, will be preparing in Kranjska Gora for two weeks and then travel to Montes Claros to join Bernardo Rezende’s Brazilian national team as the South Americans are currently preparing for the much anticipated Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

“We had an exceptional season last year, we are a great team, we get along really well with each other and it is great to be back. I think everyone is excited and eager to start working. There are two intense months ahead of us, but we are determined to make another step forward this year,” Alen Šket said minutes after his arrival in Kranjska Gora.

Giani revealed his list of 23 players at the beginning of April, but decided to start the first week with only 14, for now without Tine Urnaut and Mitja Gasparini, who are still playing for their respective clubs in Qatar and France, and Klemen Čebulj who got some extra days off after a very long and busy season in Italy.

Dejan Vinčić, who just came back from Lebanon will join the team on Monday, as will do also the players of ACH Volley LJUBLJANA and Calcit KAMNIK – Mario Koncilja, Žiga Donik, Jan Brulec, Tonček Štern, Žiga Štern, Sašo Štalekar and Klemen Hribar, who are still playing the finals of the Slovenian national league.

The players currently working in Kranjska Gora under the guidance of coach Giani are Gregor Ropret, Aleš Kök, Matic Vrtovec, Alen Pajenk, Danijel Koncilja, Miha Bregar, Alen Šket, Jan Klobučar, Matej Kök, Jani Kovačič and Urban Toman.
