Jurmala prepares to host Latvia’s largest ever Beach Volleyball event
2016 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship - Jurmala Masters

Jurmala, Latvia, May 20, 2016. This year the city of Jurmala will be hosting the largest Beach Volleyball competition ever organised across the Baltic countries, the 2016 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship – Jurmala Masters, which will be held from September 1 to 4 at the Jurmala Beach Volleyball Centre in Majori. Europe’s leading Beach Volleyball players will take part in the tournament not only in the men’s, but also in the women’s competition, for the first ever double-gender competition of this calibre to take place in Latvia.

Among those set to participate in the tournament and competing for € 50,000 prize money will be Latvia’s rising Beach Volleyball stars and 2015 U18 European champions, Tina Graudina and Paula Neciporuka, as well as Latvia’s superstars, reigning European champions Janis Smedins and Aleksandrs Samoilovs. 16 teams per gender will compete in the Main Draw of the Jurmala Masters with another 16 men’s and women’s pairs set to join the qualification round.
The organisation and delivery of the Jurmala Masters will start with the construction of a stadium with a capacity of 2,800 spectators; the stadium will be located right by the beach, as it happened at last year’s FIVB World Championships in the Netherlands and will be done at the Rio 2016 Olympics on Copacabana beach as well.

After the successful organisation of a men’s-only Satellite in 2014, the men’s-only Jurmala Masters in 2015, and with the double-gender Masters coming up in early September this year, the city of Jurmala will further cement its position as one of the real ‘Meccas’ of the sport on the European Beach Volleyball map.

The chairman of the Jurmala City Council Gatis Truksnis is pleased that for the third year in a row the resort city can offer its residents and guests a quality, high-level Beach Volleyball event. “Such high-profile Beach Volleyball event on the beach of Jurmala has now become a tradition, and our city continues to work to develop and maintain this tradition. For this, Jurmala has all the prerequisites – nature, infrastructure and experience,” he said.

Beach volleyball player Tina Graudina admitted that she feels a great deal of responsibility participating in her first Masters tournament, even more in her home city of Jurmala. “I am very excited to play Beach Volleyball on the wonderful beach of Jurmala. My partner Paula and I have been preparing especially for this championship, and we are happy that that our friends, fans and family will be able to support us from the stands.”

Latvian Volleyball Federation President Atis Sausnitis expressed his satisfaction that Latvia and Jurmala are capable of organising a high-level Beach Volleyball tournament, which has received the positive reviews of international Beach Volleyball experts after last year’s inaugural Jurmala Masters. “This year we continue to gather organisational experience with an even larger championship, where Latvia’s best women’s Beach Volleyball players will also compete so that they can prepare in the best way for the European Championship Final that will be taking place next year in Jurmala. I believe that by continuing to work at this level, in a few years Jurmala and all of Latvia’s residents will have the opportunity to watch top-level Beach Volleyball,” he said.

Latvia’s best Beach Volleyball player Aleksandrs Samoilovs: “For Janis and I this will be a special summer filled with challenges, for which we have been diligently preparing. We are going to be one hundred percent ready to compete both at the Olympic Games, as well as at the Jurmala Masters at the beginning of September. When playing an international Beach Volleyball competition in Jurmala we always get to feel special emotions, because we want to excite Latvia’s Beach Volleyball friends and the guests of Jurmala with our game.”

The 2016 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship – Jurmala Masters will take place from September 1 to 4 at the Jurmala beach centre in Majori; the first-double gender Masters ever organised in Latvia will be a perfect rehearsal for the CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship Final that Latvia’s most popular seaside resort will be hosting next year. This year six Beach Volleyball courts – four plus two for the teams’ warm-up – will be set up especially for the championship on Jurmala beach. The final matches will be contested in the centre court which can accommodate up to 2,800 fans.
