First official Snow Volleyball tournament held in Moscow
News from the National Federations
Moscow, Russia, January 17, 2017. A first, official Snow Volleyball competition took place this past weekend in the Russian capital with matches played at a venue mostly known for hosting high-level Beach Volleyball events – such as the Moscow Grand Slam for the last five years – the beach sports complex at Vodniy stadium.
This time around, Snow Volleyball took centre stage with as many as 20 teams competing in two categories – there was indeed a men’s competition and a mixed pairs’ tournament. Siblings Andrey and Aleksander Motorkin won the men’s tournament as Irina Fedorova and Nikolay Vinakov stood on top of the podium at the end of the mixed pairs’ event.
Snow Volleyball is rapidly growing in popularity in Russia, especially after late in 2016, the Russian Ministry of Sport recognised it as an official sport and the Russian Volleyball Federation started promoting it extensively in close cooperation with its regional associations. A number of events have already taken place in Moscow and Saint Petersburg with more set to follow until the end of the winter season.
