Drawing of Lots set the tone for first, historic #EuroVolleyU17M championship
2017 CEV U17 Volleyball European Championship - Men

Istanbul, Turkey, May 8, 2017. The rising stars of men’s European Volleyball can look forward to their premiere on the continental stage when 12 teams will take to the court later this summer for the Final Round of the inaugural CEV U17 Volleyball European Championship – Men. The event will be taking place from July 3 to 11 in the Turkish city of Konya and crown the first ever European champions in this age group.

After completion of two rounds of qualifications – the first organised by each Zonal Association in 2016 and a second held this past April – 11 teams booked their tickets to Konya and are set to join hosts Turkey in the quest for the medals.

The 12 participating teams will start their journey in the pool stage of the competition as per the results of the Drawing of Lots held on Monday at Volley Hotel in Istanbul:

Pool I:
Turkey, Finland, Greece, The Netherlands, Bulgaria, Serbia
Pool II: Russia, Italy, Czech Republic, Belgium, Belarus, Spain

The top two teams from each pool will play crossed semi-finals whereas the third and fourth ranked teams at the end of the pool phase will contest the classification matches for places 5 to 8. The competition will reach its climax on Tuesday, July 11 when the bronze and gold medal matches will take place – and one team will go down in history as the first ever continental champions in this age category.

On Monday, CEV Vice President and Treasurer Özkan Mutlugil and ESOC member Willy Bruninx supervised the Drawing of Lots, which set the tone for a truly memorable Volleyball festival involving the most promising and talented Volleyball players in Europe.

“It is a great pleasure for us to host this event in Konya as a European Championship takes place for the first time in this age category,” said Turkish Volleyball Federation (TVF) Board of Administration member, Mr Suat Güler. “I am confident that many Volleyball fans will fill the stands and have a great time while witnessing many exciting matches and supporting our national team in the best way. I already wish the best of success to all participating teams and I invite all the people of Konya to fill the stands and join this Volleyball party.”

“The CEV attach great importance to this event, which is taking place for the very first time,” said CEV Vice President and Treasurer, Mr Özkan Mutlugil. “Turkey has become very familiar with hosting international events. I would like to congratulate everyone, especially our friends from the Turkish Volleyball Federation, who will be working with much passion for the successful delivery of this tournament. I have no doubt that Konya will successfully play host to this competition. I wish everyone involved in this organisation and especially to all participating teams an enjoyable tournament and a great time in Konya.”

“It is very exciting that this important event will take place in Konya,” said Willy Bruninx, member of the European Sports Organising Commission (ESOC). “There is no doubt that Turkey, which has hosted many important events lately, will do a very good job in the delivery of this tournament as well.”

Turkey U17 men’s national team head coach Hüseyin Düzceler commented: “I believe we have had a good draw. We will have very tough challenges with Bulgaria, Finland, the Netherlands, Serbia and Greece when playing in Pool I. We will start our camp immediately after the completion of the Turkish national championship. After a good preparation period, I believe we will be able to compete at the highest level when the European finals take place in Konya.”
