CEV headquarters explore new horizons with the help of Maja Poljak
News from the CEV

Luxembourg, November 23, 2017. It has been one of the goals set by the CEV leadership around President Boričić to somehow ‘reshape’ the CEV headquarters in Luxembourg and turn the ‘Home of European Volleyball’ into a real service provider supporting all relevant stakeholders, and primarily National Federations and clubs in their efforts to grow Volleyball. It is in line with this approach that a former star player, who retired from competitive sport earlier this year, recently joined the multi-national staff working in the Grand Duchy. Maja Poljak is, among other things, a four-time winner of the CEV Volleyball Champions League and one of the top middle blockers European Volleyball could boast for more than a decade.

Maja moved to Luxembourg in mid-October to join the CEV Events Department after announcing her retirement from the sport some months ago following completion of the 2016-2017 season where she played for Dinamo MOSCOW. “A number of physical problems have been bothering me more and more for the last couple of years and therefore I decided to end my career in order to stop ‘torturing’ myself and the medical staff around me,” she explains.

Poljak is happy with her second life in Luxembourg and looks forward to playing a different role, this time off the court, to grow Volleyball and take the sport to the next level. “Luxembourg is a very peaceful place and it is a nice change after living for many years in huge and chaotic cities such as Istanbul and Moscow. As for my role at the CEV, I will be working closely with the organisers of our top sports events and hope I can help with their successful delivery, so that we can take as many people as possible to our beautiful sport,” Maja says. “I will also work closely with the European Cups Commission and European Sports Organising Commission as well as with the Marketing Department, so I have a bit of a multi-functional job.”

Maja’s move to Luxembourg and to the CEV has drawn much attention and interest from fans on social media – especially following her own announcement on Instagram (see above) and the release of this video:

It is the first time a former top player has transitioned straight from the court to a desk at the CEV headquarters. However, everyone is sure that Maja will be shining in this new position as much as she did when taking to the Volleyball court with the likes of star-studded teams such as Foppapedretti BERGAMO, VakifBank, Eczacibasi VitrA ISTANBUL, and Dinamo MOSCOW…
