Surprising national cup winners crowned in Hungary
News from the National Federations

Budapest, Hungary, March 19, 2018. The 2018 edition of the Hungarian national cup reached its climax this past weekend with the final stage of the competition where the teams of RC KAZINCBARCIKA and NYÍREGYHÁZA emerged as the eventual winners.

RC KAZINCBARCIKA had progressed to the final of the national cup for the first time in 11 years and as a result, they tried everything from the beginning of the game with KECSKEMET RC to secure a much-desired victory. The first two sets ended in their favour (25-21, 25-20). In the third set, there was a much closer fight, as the opponents mobilised their last forces to stay in the match but eventually KAZINCBARCIKA were able to have the upper hand to secure a 25-22 win and 3-0 victory. “We played better and better throughout the game and because of our performance, we deserved the victory,” said their coach Daniel Oravecz.

The team of Fino KAPOSVAR claimed the bronze medal following their 3-0 victory over Pénzügyőr BUDAPEST.

The women’s final on Sunday featured the team of NYÍREGYHÁZA, who were contesting their first such game in 11 years as well, and two-time reigning champions Linamar-BÉKÉSCSABAI RS KFT. The latter team started the match better and won the first set at the end of a very close fight (26-24). However, after that the course of the match changed, as NYÍREGYHÁZA put a lot of pressure on the opponent and easily won the following two sets (25-15, 25-16). This trend continued at the beginning of the fourth set but Linamar-BÉKÉSCSABAI RS KFT fought back with the help of their star player Lucia Fresco (25-21). In the last set, NYÍREGYHÁZA dominated from start to end as they had done in the second and third ones, this resulting in a landslide 15-5 victory.

László Hollósy, who was leading the winning team for the first time, said that of course he was very happy with the result and added that the players acted as a great team and that was the key to their victory.
Vasas Obuda BUDAPEST claimed third place after another close fight resulting in a 3-2 victory over JÁSZBERÉNY.
