Croatia and Italy seize Volleyball crowns at Mediterranean Games

Tarragona, Spain, July 1, 2018. Croatia and Italy claimed on Sunday the gold medals from the women’s and men’s Volleyball competition of the XVIII Mediterranean Games held in Tarragona, Spain.

Croatia stormed to a 3-1 victory (25-16, 25-13, 17-25, 25-14) in the women’s final with Greece. Their star player Samanta Fabris top scored with 21 points, as Sanja Popovic-Gamma and Martina Samadan added 14 and 13 respectively to the Croatian tally. Anthi Vasilantonaki recorded 13 points for Greece in their losing effort. Croatia registered as many as 14 blocks, with Samadan contributing to this haul with six stuffs of her own. The team coached by Frane Zanic improved on the bronze medal they won five years ago in Mersin, where Italy and Turkey had claimed the top positions of the podium.

On Saturday, Turkey had secured the bronze medals after edging France 3-1 (24-26, 27-25, 25-14, 25-19) with as many as 23 points scored by Tugba Senoglu. France’s top scorers were team captain Juliette Fidon and Héléna Cazaute with 12 points apiece.

Italy dropped their first set in the competition but eventually emerged victorious from the men’s final with hosts Spain. The ‘Azzurri’ claimed a 3-1 victory (25-22, 25-17, 33-35, 25-23) to retain the title they won back in 2013 in Mersin. Sebastiano Milan top scored for Italy with 27 points, including four blocks and two aces, as Giacomo Raffaelli added 19 to the Italian count. Andres Villena paced Spain with 24 points, as the hosts had to be content with the silver medal.

Greece had won the bronze medal match contested on Saturday by claiming a dramatic 3-2 victory over Egypt (25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 17-25, 15-10) after dissipating a 2-0 lead. Nikos Zoupani top scored for Greece with a massive haul of 29 points.
