TEAMS FOR EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL ROUND DEFINITE
97,22,9

Kazan, Russia, September 9, 2006. The 16 men’s and 16 women’s teams participating in the Final Round of the European Championship 2006/07 are definite following the completion of the third playoff round on Saturday, which was played in a home & away modus.

Seven teams were already qualified for the Final Round in the men’s as well as the women’s draw taking into account the previous edition’s final ranking as well as including the organising federation’s team, thus the nine remaining places had to be decided between 28 teams in the men’s and 25 teams in the women’s following the three rounds of qualification.

Six teams in the men’s as well as the women’s event qualified for the Final Round after they finished the second round pool phase as first ranked of their pool. In the men’s these were Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Netherlands, Slovakia as well as Turkey, whilst in the women’s Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Spain, Germany and Serbia Montenegro won their pools. The six second ranked teams of each pool had to enter the third round home & away playoff phase, which concluded on Saturday. Finland and Germany won both of their encounters facing Estonia, respectively the Czech Republic, thus qualifying for the Final Round, whilst Slovenia pulled through thanks to a higher set ratio than their opponents from Belarus. “We are happy to have reached the Final Round”, commented German head coach Stelian Moculescu, “Although we started the second match very nervously, we found back to our game near the end of the set.” In the women’s third round Belarus beat Slovenia twice, Slovakia overcame the Ukraine in both matches and France conceded only one set against Greece.

The 16 teams of the Final Round will be separated into four preliminary pools (A, B, C and D) of four teams each. The best three of each pool will move on to the playoffs pools (E and F) from which the best two will qualify for the semifinal stage.

The men’s Final Round of the Indesit European Championship 2006/07 will be held in Moscow and St. Petersburg (RUS) from 6-16 September 2007, whilst the women’s Final Round will start off in the Belgian cities of Charleroi and Hasselt on 20 September 2007 before Luxembourg will host the Final Four on the weekend of 29-30 September 2007.
