Rising Beach Volleyball stars Veretiuk and Shekunov meet with their idols at #VolleyGala
News from the CEV

Luxembourg, November 4, 2018. Russian Beach Volleyball rising stars Denis Shekunov and Dmitrii Veretiuk received on Friday night the special CEV award for outstanding achievements in age-group competitions at the annual European Volleyball Gala, this time held in Budapest. When it comes to this prize, they follow in the footsteps of their compatriots Mariia Bocharova and Maria Voronina, the recipients of this very same award last year in Moscow.

Apart from the rather disappointing result that they had to be content with at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Shekunov and Veretiuk had a brilliant season, claiming gold at both the U19 World Championship and U20 European Championship.

This is a truly remarkable achievement for such young players who are only 17 and 16 years old. “I have been playing Volleyball since I was six,” recounts Shekunov. “At some point my present coach Andrey Shapovalov ‘scouted’ me and asked me to try Beach Volleyball. Later on, Igor Olefir joined in to coach Dima [Veretiuk] and me. I am grateful for the chance I have had to prove myself. It was a very difficult season with many tournaments. We won and lost, but we do not stop here and want to go further.”

Denis Shekunov and Dmitrii Veretiuk portrayed upon receiving the award for outstanding achievements in age-group competitions from CEV Vice-Presidents Lubor Halanda and Banu Can-Schürmann.
“I was an indoor Volleyball player when two years ago I was offered to try Beach Volleyball,” recounts Veretiuk. “I took part in my first tournament. My present coach Igor Olefir saw me there and proposed I would focus on Beach Volleyball. I feel very thankful for the opportunity to grow in this way. This season was an extremely eventful one and we have been working hard for that. We are going to keep the pace and look forward to achieving further success.”

Veretiuk and Shekunov, who list reigning European champions and Kings of the Beach Anders Berntsen Mol and Christian Sandlie Sørum as their idols, said upon receiving their award in Budapest: “We are proud to be here and happy to take this trophy home. We thank the CEV for the nomination and invitation to the European Volleyball Gala. We feel privileged to visit beautiful Budapest this fall!”

Interestingly enough, Veretiuk/Shekunov and Mol/Sørum ended up receiving their respective award on the very same night – and could take a picture together to portray the bright future that lies ahead for European Beach Volleyball!
