Both Simonsson siblings progress to NEVZA Beach Sweden semis!
News from the Zonal Associations

Göteborg, Sweden, November 3, 2018. The odds were actually quite high that this could happen but eventually siblings Sigrid and Ludvig Simonsson made it to Sunday’s semi-finals of the NEVZA Beach Sweden event held in Göteborg. Overall, Sweden continue to dominate the tournament and hosts Göteborg Beachvolley Club (GBC) is accounting for the most surprises.

The last stop of this year’s NEVZA Beach Volleyball Tour is taking place at the iconic Beach Centre in Kviberg, Göteborg. Of the eight remaining teams competing in the semi-finals, there are five from Sweden, two from Denmark and one from Finland. All teams from England, Serbia and Norway have surprisingly had to leave the tournament already.

It is a fact that Sigrid Simonsson has been one of Northern Europe’s top Beach Volleyball players for quite a while, but that she would have done so well with Anne-Lie Rininsland, a comeback player, mother of two children aged 11 and 9, is truly impressive. In their quarterfinal match, Simonsson and Rininsland beat Sigrid’s former partner Tadva Yoken and Sofia Wahlén – the first seeded team of the tournament.

In Saturday’s last game, which did not start until slightly after 10 pm due to many extremely close games causing schedule delays, Sigrid’s brother Ludvig brought the same heroic effort on the men’s side – winning the quarterfinal against the tournament’s top seeds. Ludvig Simonsson/Alexander Herrmann beat Martin Appelgren/Alexander Annerstedt 15-10 in the third, all-important set. All four players are members of the hosting Göteborg Beachvolley Club.

In Sunday’s semi-finals, they will be playing the gold medal winners from the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, David Åhman from Umeå and Jonatan Hellvig from Lidingö. These two teams already played each other once on Friday in a match that went to the third set - that time with the Youth Olympic champions emerging as the eventual winners. Åhman/Hellvig have won all of their three matches in the tournament in three sets. Their latest win Saturday came against the Sollentuna-duo Jakob Molin/Staffan Blomgren.
