FRANKFURT and CHAUMONT take huge steps towards #CLVolleyM group stage with straight set victories
2019 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Men

Luxembourg, November 7, 2018. Germany's third placed team are well on their way to the group stage of the 2019 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Men. The straight set away win gives United Volleys FRANKFURT an enormous edge over PAOK THESSALONIKI in order to make it to Pool A of the #CLVolleyM pool phase. CHAUMONT VB 52 HM had the home court advantage over Vojvodina NS Seme NOVI SAD, which proved to be very beneficial for the French. With a dominant block and far less mistakes than the Serbians, CHAUMONT now only need two sets to book their ticket to Round 4.

PAOK THESSALONIKI (GRE) vs. United Volleys FRANKFURT (GER) 0-3 (25-27, 17-25, 21-25)

  • Around 1,000 supporters of PAOK made some noise once more at “PAOK Sports Arena” and they cheered their team till the end of the match, despite the first home defeat of the season.
  • German rookies United Volleys FRANKFURT made a huge step in their effort to advance to the main phase of the 2019 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Men, thanks to their away triumph over Greek side PAOK THESSALONIKI in 3-0 sets, in their first-ever clash for Round 3 of Europe’s elite club competition.
  • Sergiu Stancu’s team will now have a mountain to climb in the second leg, scheduled for Tuesday, November 13 at Fraport Arena, where they will have to win 3-0 or 3-1 sets and then the Golden Set as well.
  • Their German opponent will just need two sets in front of their fans in order to seal their ticket to Pool A, where Zenit KAZAN (RUS), Halkbank ANKARA (TUR) and Knack ROESELARE (BEL) are already waiting.
  • Moritz Karlitzek was the top scorer of the match, with a total of 13 points for United Volleys FRANKFURT, while Alexander Shafranovich scored 10 for PAOK THESSALONIKI, as tonight top-gun Mitar Tzourits wasn’t as effective as usually.

Sergiu Stancu, head coach of PAOK THESSALONIKI: “Congratulations to our opponents for the victory. We will have a difficult task in Germany after this result, but the qualification is not over yet. We managed to beat ISTANBUL BBSK by winning the Golden Set in the away match and we can do it again. I believe that my players can turn things around in Frankfurt.”

Stelio DeRocco, head coach of United Volleys FRANKFURT: “This is an outstanding result for our team, against a very good opponent. We dominated with a lot of good plays and a lot of determination. We have been playing well on the road in all our CEV Volleyball Champions League matches this season. I’m happy with my players, because they are showing consistency at a good level, both at home and away”.

CHAUMONT VB 52 HM (FRA) vs. Vojvodina NS Seme NOVI SAD (SRB) 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-23)

  • 800 spectators at the Complex Sportif Rene-Tys in Reims witnessed the 3-0 victory of CHAUMONT VB 52 HM over Serbia's Vojvodina NS Seme NOVI SAD.
  • CHAUMONT are trying to qualify to Round 4 for the second year in a row. As champions of France they started from the group stage directly last year, now they are looking to join TOURS VB through Round 3 as France's representatives.
  • A big difference between the teams today was the blocking ability of CHAUMONT, they outscored the Serbians 10-4 in that aspect of the game.
  • Top scorer for the home team was Matej Patak with 13 points. His counterpart Lazaro Fundora Travieso of NOVI SAD also scored 13 on the night.
  • The rematch will be played on November 13th, at 20.00 CET.

Martin Atanasov, player of CHAUMONT: "We were not prepared to win so easily, but it is important to win 3-0. We have to stay focussed, it will be another team in Novi Sad, a better team. It is important to win as a team. Despite the injuries, everybody is involved in the match and everybody gives his best to help the team. It's really important for the season."

Dusko Nikolic, head coach of NOVI SAD: "First thing, I am really happy to play against CHAUMONT and to see people I know in the club. About the match, I am not happy to lose 0-3. I didn't recognise my team physically, for the first time. We needed too much time to adapt our game to the CHAUMONT game. But anything can still happen. At home, with our fans, we will do everything we can to call for a Golden Set."
